TWC2 rescued Shahjahan from Tuas yesterday. The injured worker did not get proper medical treatment from his employer, so he went to hospital himself. The hospital saw the condition was serious and warded him for 3 nights.
On discharge, company men seized him and brought him to the office. There, someone grabbed his right wrist and forcibly put his thumbprint on a document he refused to sign. They then took him to a building in Tuas and confined him in a room, saying he would be repatriated the next day. Fortunately, he managed to call a friend who had earlier received an information leaflet during one of TWC2's outreach Sundays.
The friend called TWC2 and alerted us. We rushed to Tuas, confronted the boss, called the police and MOM and succeeded in getting him released. The photo is of Shahjahan getting his first proper meal of the day -- dinner at our soup kitchen -- after we rescued him.
A big thanks to all the volunteers who participated in outreach and helped distribute leaflets in recent months. You helped make a difference!
