A 29-year-old Norges Bank Investment Management senior analyst, Brinsley Gould, died of heatstroke when he collapsed towards the end of the 10.5km Green Corridor Run on 6 March.
He had made it to the 9KM mark when he stumbled and fell shortly before 9AM. He was taken by stretcher to a private ambulance, which transported Mr Gould to the National University Hospital.
However, the ambulance he was riding in did not have an automated external defibrillator (AED) to restart his heart. This hampered treatment of Mr Gould, who had already lapsed into an asystole state (where his heart had stopped beating).
State Coroner Marvin Bay agreed in his findings that AEDs should be made more accessible and readily available at any sporting event. However, he also noted that the doctor who treated Mr Gould was careful to add that it was not clear if the device would have helped in Mr Gould's case.
The Coroner said that Mr Gould's death was a "sad misadventure''.
