PRC-born National Table Tennis player and current world no. 6 Feng Tian Wei has been axed from the National Team after she was deemed unsuitable for STTA's plans to rejuvenate the squad for the 2020 Olympics. Following the table tennis team's dismal showing during the Rio 2016 Olympics, this bold move was part of it's new high performance plan.
The STTA statement said: "Feng Tianwei, who has been a member of the national team since 2007 and who will be 34-years-old during the Tokyo Olympics, does not fit into the STTA's current plans for rejuvenation.
Feng Tianwei has been a cornerstone of the national team since 2007. She has brought many golden moments to the sport.
We would like to thank her for all that she has done for Singapore table tennis, and we would like to take this opportunity to wish Tianwei all the best in her future endeavours."
Hours after the shock STTA announcement, Feng Tian Wei announced on her Facebook insisting that she will continue to participate in international events albeit in a different method. Feng thanked the public for their concern and promised to share her plans in a few days time. She ended her statement by vowing she will not be leaving the international competitive table tennis scene.
"大家晚上好,相信大家看了今天的报道,我想我会继续参加国际比赛的,只是方式会有一些改变,几天后我会跟大家和媒体朋友们公布今后发展规划和参赛情况,谢谢大家的关注,让朋友们担心了,请放心我不会离开国际赛场的!
I believe most of you have read the report today, i will continue to complete in international competition using a different method. I will share my plan with the media and the public in a few day time.Thank you everyone for your concern, i will not leave the international scene!"
