Dear A.S.S. Editor
Seems like Ong Ye Kung is getting the media limelight lately. He is in the news again today, stating that in order for Singapore to further be successful and to sustain economic growth, we cannot depend on manpower growth, but rather on innovation and productivity.
All good soundbites, but hello! Is this what we have been doing all this while? Since he said cannot depend on manpower growth, why still we see many employers hiring foreign talent? Shouldn't the number for foreign talent go downwards, instead of upwards? After all, Minister Ong himself said we cannot depend on manpower growth. Anyways, smart of him to mention that our manpower limitations is also partly due to the need to preserve a sense of identity. Basically saying what Singaporeans want to hear, that foreign talent cannot be growing at large numbers at the expense of the local flavour.
Seems like Minister Ong is slowly learning to say all the right things, things that will please his party and Singaporeans.
