NO PAY HIKE THIS YEAR FOR SG WORKERS

$
0
0

Dear A.S.S. Editor

An annual survey by recruitment firm Robert Walters on the employment and wage outlook globally have indicated that most employees in Singapore will not get a pay hike this year. Unless you are working in the information technology (IT) and digital marketing sectors, where talent is scarce, then hopes of seeing more money coming in this year through salary will not be fulfilled.

The only thing that will see an increase in Singapore is the cost of living. so, while our salaries remain constant, and no hope of seeing a pay hike for one whole year, prices will keep going up and up. In fact, already started, citing the CNY period as a factor.

Thank you! No need to work so hard this year. Your salary will not increase.

I took bus 982E today around 7am to 8am. This lady claimed to be from BOCC, wearing smrt uniform and said my card is not captured and asked me for my particulars and a $50 fine.

I refused to give and initiated to call the police. The police came and i alighted the bus. Waste my time and i check my card transaction history after that, it shows it was captured and deducted from my card.

When i asked this smrt indian lady what is the bus driver job scope and company policy, she said their job is to drive the bus only. So we can board the bus without tapping and bus driver won't bothered??

Now i called them and asked for compensation instead. They should be the one paying me $50!!

Please beware when someone approached you like this

SG MUST HAVE LAWS FOR PEDESTRIANS ON FOOT PATH TOO!

$

Dear A.S.S. Editor

I read with amusement an article on the TODAY newspaper, writing about how Singapore should have a code of ethics for pedestrians walking on footpaths and on park connectors.

Article writer basically indicated that since cyclists and personal mobility device users would soon be subjected to rules on the proper usage of roads and paths, pedestrians should not be spared also. He was ashamed at how some of us walk on footpaths and park connectors with disregard for our own safety and that of others.

So he wants a code of ethics for pedestrians to be rolled out. Pedestrians should not use headphones to listen to music and should not read and text on their mobile phone. When a shared path is narrow, they should walk in a single row so as not to obstruct others.

Eh, hello! Are we back in primary school or what? Pedestrians also need rules? Cyclists and mobility device uses needs the rules because they are on wheels, pedestrians on foot, just use the brains once in a while to see where you are going! Like that also want rules? Obviously never use brain to suggest this.

MRT DELAYS THING OF THE PAST? MRT LINES GETS NEW SIGNALLING SYSTEM AND SLEEPER REPLACEMENT

$

Dear A.S.S. Editor

Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan just officiated on the completion of the replacement of the MRT sleeper replacement programme. This is for the East West Line and the North South Line. The project, which involved replacing timber track sleepers with hardier, concrete ones, started in August 2013 and was completed in December last year.

Minister must be happy, his project finally completed. The LTA also took the opportunity to announce that they will implement a new signalling system on the North-South Line progressively from March this year. This will ensure trains run at faster intervals. Could this be the solutions to packed MRT trains during peak hours? Only time will tell.

So, will we see any more teething problems on our old and creaking MRT lines? If not wrong, the newer MRT lines which are not supposed to be creaking also have many many problems. Delay due to MRT is almost a normal thing now. So Mr Minister sir, any other suggestions on how to solve these problems?

CHRISTIAN SCHOOL SEGREGATES HALAL & NON-HALAL CANTEEN TABLES?

According to a reader, he encountered a practice in St Michael's School (now renamed St Joseph's Institution since 2007) where he and his family were told to sit in another table because they were consuming food that was non-halal.

The reader claims this practice was not there in the past when he attended St Michael's School and wonders why schools must now segregate halal and non-halal food sections.

Read his account here.

"I took leave with my wife to send and accompany my son on his first day at St. Michael's School a fortnight ago and was rather perplexed to have received a nasty surprise in the form of racial segregation in a Christian school that I grew up in.

When we bought some food at the canteen and sat at 1 of the tables, we were told by a staff to leave that seat as we were consuming "non-halal" food and the table was only meant for muslim peoples. Now I wonder how did this came about as I previously studied in this school and never had this sort of problem, kids muslim or otherwise and even vegetarians, all sat at the same table to dine and chat together.

MOE and PMO must stop this kinda nonsense or it will breed ill will among other races and religions, in addition to promoting a sense of self entitlement which in turn will lead to isolation and extremism!

SLA FORCED FOOTBALL ACADEMY TO CLOSE AFTER 7PM. UNCARING ELITES WIN AGAIN

$

Dear A.S.S. Editor

SLA recently acted on complaints by 5 residents who had demanded that the football academy pitches at the Home United Youth Football Academy (HYFA) be shut down, due to the noise it generated. Five people versus hundreds of kids who would have been given the opportunity to enjoy being kids and play on real football pitches, instead of on their mobile devices, and SLA bowed down to these five people. They must be powerful!

Apparently, the noise generated from people playing football is too noisy, so cannot concentrate on other more important things. SLA in the first place had slated the space for sports usage, now they backtracked and ordered the pitches to be closed after 7pm. Singapore wants a sports culture, but if authorities cannot even be firm against five residents (!), then how is sports culture going to be cultivated?

Hope the five residents realise their selfish reasons for denying hundreds of kids the enjoyment of playing on a football field is typical of the uncaring elite syndrome so prevalent in Singapore.

According to the reader, who is a taxi driver, he says that he confronted the van driver, who told him arrogantly that he had been approved by the Land Transport Authority. He then proceeded to load his tourists' baggage and ferry them to their destinations.

Are private van drivers allowed to serve as taxi transport in Singapore?

TRAFFIC RULE BREAKER FUMES AT TIN PEI LING FOR NOT HELPING HIM WAIVE HIS FINE

$

Dear Editor,

I would like share an incident that happened to my uncle last month when he approached PAP Macpherson Branch to seek a reduction of a traffic penalty as he did stop halfway at a junction when the lights turned red.

As he had previously tried on 2 separate occasions but failed to obtain leniency, he went again a third time to the Branch but this time, met with an extremely unhelpful and unfriendly grassroots who goes by the name "Chua".

Chua told my uncle bluntly to stop wasting both his and the MP's time as he claimed my uncle had already flouted the law and the government's rules are always right! He said he failed to see why people such as my uncle and other like minded residents always keep coming and bothering them with such unimportant, trivial matters and should instead, just pay the fines and accept the demerit points in their stride.

At which time, my uncle was already fuming from Chua's deliberate display of arrogance and yelled in front of everyone asking if he's the MP or Tin Pei Ling was? To which he retorted that Tin Pei Ling has single handed appointed him as her "gatekeeper" and FB administrator and he can act as he pleases to whom gets to see her and who doesn't.

My uncle eventually had to leave as Chua threatened to call the police if he doesn't. To all those 70% who supported the PAP during the last elections, be prepared to get screwed til 2020 as they are not even afraid to show their horns and tails now!

DR CHEE: THE NEW WORLD IS MAKING S'PORE IRRELEVANT BUT THE PAP STILL DONT GET IT

$
0
0

THE BACKLASH AGAINST globalisation has never been stronger, the oil and gas industry is in the doldrums and seems far from recovering, the adoption of clean energy is moving faster than anyone had anticipated, China is aggressively investing in infrastructure in Malaysia and beyond, and jobs are being rapidly lost to automation.

These developments are conspiring to render Singapore irrelevant to the world. Make no mistake: A crisis is in the making, that is, if it's not already upon us.

Yet, there is little indication that the PAP gets it. If it did, it would not continue to stymie the development of our only lifeline: an innovative culture.

In this domain, nothing is more critical than education. But the system here, stuck in an era designed more for the industrial revolution than the digital one, shows no sign of a rebirth.

We put our children through endless rounds of tests and exams, and then pigeon-hole them according to their scores. This classification limits the options of their study for the rest of their school career and, thereafter for the overwhelming majority, options of their careers for the rest of their lives.
Picture
As early as Primary 3, students in selected 'elite' schools are subjected to a series of tests for entrance into the Gifted Education Programme. Only the highest-scoring 5 percent qualify.

The rest undergo the Primary School Leaving Examintion, or PSLE. Depending on one's results, a student is shunted to the Express, Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical) stream.

Higher-scoring Express students undergo a four-year secondary school career while the Normal-stream students will be put through their paces over five years.

At Secondary 2, Express students are further tested and streamed into those taking 'Pure' or 'Combined' Sciences, the former emphasise Physics and/or Chemistry and Biology while the latter is more focused in the Arts and Humanities.

At Secondary 4 (Secondary 5 for Normal-stream students), the kids sit for the O-Level examinations. The better performers go on to Junior College at the end of which the sit for the A-Level exams to determine their entry into the university. The remainder opt for a polytechnic or the Institute for Technical Education.

Delayed development, the various types of intelligence, and gender and individual differences are cast aside in a mill that grinds out students better equipped to regurgitate information than critically process it.

Students make the memorisation of answers in the Ten-Year Series (publications of past-exam questions) an art form. Tuition centres even advertise “How to spot the tricky questions that can make or break your child's goal of getting A”.

Read also Scrap PSLE, delay streaming and foster creativity

Observers, both at home and overseas, repeatedly point out that the rigid exam-oriented curriculum is antithetical to critical and creative thinking.

Education Minister (Schools) Ng Chee Meng sees the problem. He acknowledges that the system produces workers who are technically competent but “do not think out of the box and lack the derring-do to push boundaries”.

These traits, he noted, need to be nurtured from young. He exhorted pupils to chiong, the Hokkien vernacular for taking risks. “It's a mindset,” he said. “An attitude of wanting to do better, find break-throughs, of wanting to innovate...taking into account the risks involved and doing it anyway.”

He warned of a rapidly changing world: “What has afforded success for one generation, may not for another.”

Mindful words, no doubt, but they remain, worryingly, words. He demonstrates no intention to revamp the education system. He doesn't possess, in his own words, the derring-do to push boundaries.

When he finally roused himself to make changes, he declared that his ministry will discontinue the use of T-scores to rank PSLE results, 'Achievement Levels' will be used instead. The remedy is like applying Mopiko on a malignant tumour.

And get this, the switchover will only take place in 2021!

When a general exhorts his troops to chiong but he remains rooted behind the frontline, paralysed by fear, he runs the danger of being ignored.

Worse, his inaction risks jeopardising the nation's future – a future that is already here.

Dear A.S.S,

Your support in publishing this letter would be very much appreciated because I would like to issue a warning to the racist and Islamophobic members of HardwareZone.

I am taking a pro-active measure by making it my personal goal to ensure that every single one of such members earn themselves a criminal record for making inflammatory remarks about Malay-Muslims or Islam.

This will be done in stages by lodging multiple police reports, the first of which – report #G/20170119/7014 – was electronically lodged on 19th January 2017 against a member using the handle “RobinTeoHood”. My face-to-face meeting with the officer-in-charge took place yesterday at Bedok Police Division where my official statement was recorded.

The following are the links that I provided as evidences. The police have printed them out and thus it is okay for me to share them with the public.

After 2 sleepless night, I have decided to write this... this was happen on Friday 20th 2016 about 7pm at jurong point new wing b1 toilet near carpark... after we parked our car, as usual, I asked my sons go toilet to wash their hands before the dinner and we waited outside for them. After a while, my elder son came out first then follow by my younger son.

When we on the way to have our dinner, my younger son told my hubby that a man in blue colour shirt or t-shirt wearing spec pushed his head from the back and he almost fell down, just because my 5 years old accidentally stepped his feet and my son didn't apologize to him immediately. Surprisingly, no one in the male toilet walked up to help my innocent son when incident happened.

We went back to the toilet to find that man but he already left. I asked my son, why he didn't tell us immediately, he told us he scared we quarrel with that man and he didnt want us to get hurt.

To that knn man in blue shirt that pushed my son head, U BETTER WEAR DRESS OR SKIRT FOR PUSHING MY SON HEAD. What if the same incident happened to your children or grandson, how u feel? How can you do this type of thing to my kind and innocent son?

NUH WITHHOLDS CPF CHEQUE FOR PATIENT WITH OUTSTANDING BILLS

$

Please post this

hi i am a patient of nuh for years and many of times their service standard really upset me but i choose to ignore because i understand their job was not easy.

I had a procedure done in november 2016 and was told to make full payment while processing my medisave claim and cheque will be mailed directly to my home address 4-5 weeks from the date of procedure

so last few days i make a call to cpf board to check if the claim went thru or rejected and the claim actually already processes and cheque was given.

I called nhg billing hotline but was told to call clinic instead so when i called and the clinic was not sure and called their finance dept and i was shocked because they hold onto my cheque because i have few outstandings.

How can you retain patients cpf money / crossed cheque under patient name just to threaten for outstanding bills when patient already informed all clinic that she went that the outstandings will be settled by insurance. I taught once patient informed they will take note

already never take note of the information that the insurance claim is under process, still got the cheek to keep patient cheque without informing. Yes they do not make any courtesy call to let patient know about it, i mean if you let me know i just let it go and no need to arrange for any insurance claim.

And they bloody insist on keeping the cheque untill payment received. Now hospital also tailong is it? I owe thousands ar until so jialat like that.

I want my cheque back because they make things so hard and i was not aware of anything until i called. Appointment also they cancelled without letting me having an option to change the right date. They say i cannot change doctor, but when i called, again i must called then i got to know my doctor is leaving nuh and thus the new appointments will be with new doctor?!! Contadicting and again why never inform?????

Work half past six, service so lousy still got the cheek to ask for payment, still want to keep people cheque.

Beware to all, you money hospital might eat it

A reader shared with us his experience of encountering a biker who squeezed between cars, knocking into our reader's side mirror and heavily scratching it.

Even though the biker knew that he had hit his mirror, the biker continued on without even checking for damage or trying to apologize.

Read his account here.

He will cause you damages as your problem to pay for the repairs."

JOB ASSISTANCE SCHEME IS A WASTE OF TIME!

$

<Facebook post by Yong Wee>

Guess who wrote this. My primary school classmate just got retrenched in August. He’s still trying to find a job today, and he’s only asking for $1100. So he applied for the Job Assistance Scheme. The problem with the Job Assistance Scheme is this – the requirement to continue to receive financial assistance is that you must go for every interview that they arrange for you . So my friend went for every interview – he didn’t have a choice. Most of the employers told him, “Sorry you are too old”. So my friend asked them, “If you don’t want to employ someone who is 56 why ask me to come for interview?” Finally one employer told him the truth.

See when employers sign up for the scheme they can’t tell the agency that’s running it that they discriminate against older worker. So it’s wasting the time of the people who are looking for a job, wasting the time of the HR people who have to do the interviews, it’s wasting everybody’s time! But the system continues. So you have to, I think, really go to the ground and then you find out the scheme doesn’t make sense right?

WP CAUTIONS AGAINST AMENDING POHA TO PROTECT GOVT FROM HARASSMENT

$
0
0

<Article by Workers' Party>

The Workers’ Party welcomes the recent decision by the Court of Appeal in Attorney-General v Ting Choon Meng that government agencies such as MINDEF do not fall under the legal definition of “persons” under Section 15 of the Protection from Harassment Act (POHA).

However, we are concerned by the Ministry of Law’s response to the ruling, which suggests that the Government is looking into taking further action on the matter.

There is a precedent in our legal history that gives cause for concern in this regard. In December 1988, the Court of Appeal passed a landmark judgement in Chng Suan Tze v Minister for Home Affairs stating that “all power has legal limits” and the legality of detention orders under the Internal Security Act (ISA) had to be subject to judicial review. The Government at the time disagreed with the Court’s ruling and by end-January 1989, had passed retrospective legislation to abolish judicial reviews and appeals to the Privy Council for ISA cases.

As the Court noted in the case of MINDEF, the Government possesses significant resources and access to media channels that it can use to address false statements. There is hence no need for the Government to resort to using the POHA to protect itself from “harassment”. In fact, a wider application of the POHA may also open the possibility of abuse by companies, which may claim “harassment” from other companies or individuals with which they are undergoing a dispute.

The focus of the debate in Parliament on the POHA in 2014 was to protect individuals from harassment. For the POHA to be used to protect the Government from “harassment” risks weakening Singapore’s climate of free speech and robust debate. It risks turning the POHA into the latest in the many tools that the Government can use against Singaporeans who publicly express different views from the Government on its policies and actions.

The Government should be upfront about the legislative intent of the Bills it proposes. The Minister had cited reasons of justice and protection for vulnerable individuals throughout the Parliamentary debate, and provided several examples of individuals who would be protected under the new law. The prospect of the POHA being used to “protect the Government from harassment” and the rationale for why this was necessary was not explained and discussed as one of the aims of the Bill.

Should the Government react to the Court’s judgement by seeking to amend the law to more clearly define how the POHA “protects the Government from harassment”, the Workers’ Party will vigorously oppose such amendments.
