
Dr. Prasert Thongccharoen, Adviser on Disease Control for Thailand's Health Ministry confirmed that two babies suffering from microcephaly was due to infections of the zika virus. These are the first cases of zika-linked microcephaly to be announced in Southeast Asia.
Dr Prasert told members of the press that tests confirm zika infections in two cases of microcephaly and additional tests were being run on a third infant to establish relation to zika. In addition, another pregnant woman who was founded to be infected with zika was undergoing tests to determine if her unborn baby was suffering from microcephaly.
Despite the announcement, Dr. Tanarak Plipat, Director within the Thai Health Ministry assured the public that Thailand was not experiencing any Zika epidemic and that the spread of infection has not worsen. In total, there are 349 reported cases of zika infections recorded in Thailand from 1 Jan to 23 September, 33 of whom were pregnant women.
