HIGHER STARTING PAY FOR GRADS NOT ENOUGH, WHAT ABOUT NON-GRADS?

$

Dear A.S.S. Editor

With all this news and online debate about the graduates getting higher pay, make me wonder. If with the supposedly higher pay of graduates, and most of them said the higher pay is already not enough to cover the increasing cost of living, then what about those non-graduates?

Most of the unhappiness from the higher starting pay news is that this is still not enough for the young graduates, not enough for them to save quickly and get BTO, or even going through daily expenses. And these are salaries of about $3,500 or above. But those without university degrees? Let's say ITE graduates, or even poly graduates. Their starting salary definitely won't be as high as $3,500! So, if these graduates already complaining $3,500 not enough, then what about these non-graduates?

Is the chasm between graduates and non-graduates starting to become even wider? Seems like if you are a non-university graduate, then living in Singapore will never be comfortable for you. You can never get a high enough starting pay, so starting out in your working life, already at a very disadvantaged position. In fact, the chasm is so wide, it seems nobody is giving the real issues of low starting salary for these group of non-university graduates any second thoughts.

MINISTER KHAW SAID 15,000 ENGINEERS NEEDED. NEVER SAID HOW MANY WILL BE FOR THE LOCALS

Dear A.S.S. Editor

Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan said that about 15,000 engineers are needed for the trains industry by 2030. Currently, there are only 10,000 engineers now.

Wonder out of this number, how many percentage would be reserved for the locals. Have the feeling that the number of foreigners hired as engineers out of these 15,000 by 2030 will be so much more than the number of locals. 13 years is not that long a time.

Not putting up much hope that more than half hired will be locals. In fact, if locals can get half the number of jobs, then that would be an achievement indeed.

PROMOTING HEALTHY LIVING AMONG YOUTHS. GET THEM TO ABANDON THEIR MOBILE DEVICES!

$

Dear A.S.S. Editor

Seems like the task force set up to study how young Singaporeans can be encouraged to adopt healthy habits have recommended that the young should get more opportunities to take part in physical activities, within and outside schools.

This includes getting the pre-schoolers getting an hour of physical activity a day, which will double what they are doing currently, and for the primary schools to have 2 hours of physical activities per week. The Early Childhood Development Agency will also impose nutritional requirements, such as providing fruits on a regular basis and not serving sugary drinks or deep-fried food to pre-schoolers. Students at all levels will also be encouraged to eat healthy food, with the school canteens playing their part by offering healthier food and drink options.

All these are good moves to get children and the youths to participate in more physical activities and adopt healthy habits. Although they miss the most important part. Get the youth to abandon their mobile devices the whole day while in school, otherwise, they will be engaged only in their social media and games on the mobile devices.

SOME DIGITAL LOCK CAN EASILY BE OPENED BY ANYONE! BEWARE!

I'm writing to you today to voice out my unhappiness with a product I have bought in a shopping centre last year 2016 November.

My husband and I purchase a digital door lock to install on our gate through a company in shopping centre. Before buying, we have no idea how it works and the salesman convince us that it is very secure and convenient.

We decide to purchase the item and waited for them to confirm with us on installation (takes 2 weeks). Though it take a long time to arrange for installation, we wait patiently and my purchase was soon to be installed.

Recently we found out there's a video circulating online for a gate digital lock (same brand) that is easily being broken into. We decide to try and was surprised to find out that we could unlock our hdb gate lock with a screw driver and a hex key. Feeling worried, we called back the company and voice out.

Not only were they guilty of this, they told us that we need to top up additional $150 to buy another part to change. Before the purchase, we were not told about this issue and being a reputable company, they should ensure that the product (digital lock) should be secure! We are paying $799 to add on security and convenience for the family but was being forced to top up additional money for their mistake.

I hope you can share this with fellow netizens. To warn them to buy from reliable source or to clarify first before making any purchase. Below is a video proof of how we can easily unlock the digital lock.

HUGE TUAS FIRE DEALT WITH BY SCDF HEROES

Dear A.S.S. Editor

Finally, the huge fire at the Tuas Waste management plant was put out. It took about 200 fireman 4 hours to successfully fight the fire. Thankfully, all the workers at the plant managed to be evacuated before the fire engulfed the while building.

There was only one reported case of injury in the fire, that of a firefighter who went down with exhaustion. Periodic explosions were also heard as the firefighters were fighting the blaze. As the fire involved chemical waste and flammable materials, the police had advised the public to stay away from the area.

We should give our gratitude to these firefighters, who risked their life and spent 4 exhaustive hours in trying to fight the fire. Thank you, SCDF!

MAN TRIES TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF DRUNK CLUB GIRLS, GETS SHAMED ONLINE

$

A female reader got drunk while on a wild night out at the clubs, and ended up almost getting taken advantage of by someone she considered to be her "best friend".

According to the netizen, Kelly, she and a local man named Desmond were frequent gamers and were very close. She even had access to Desmond's social media accounts at one point of time in their friendship.

However, after Kelly became of legal age, she went on a clubbing binge, but became emotionally scarred after her last outing to Atlantis 10 in March 2016. Kelly alleges that her friend Desmond had tried to grope and lift her legs to her shoulders while she was drunk and too weak to do anything against him.

Desmond was only stopped after those surrounding her prevented him from going any further.

Saddened and disgusted by her "friend's" actions, she took to asking around and found several other women who suffered the same treatment at Desmond's hands.

Read her account here.

"I prefer to let bygones be bygones but people just have to trigger me and force my bad side out. As most of my friends around me know, I used to have a good friend called Desmond Sim. We were literally best friends, we gamed together, DotA2 together, League of Legends together, cafe/food/mookata hopping together and I even had access to his social media accounts.

After that, some things happened and we are just not friends anymore. Some things that will bring myself to shame. I think I'm a person who is very careful in the choices of friends but he disappointed me.

I really do not want to share this story as it wasn't a good experience but I found out I wasn't the only girl who got taken advantage of and this Desmond guy started calling me and my friends "hoes" which provoked me a lot.

2015-2016 was a hectic year for me as I turned legal and started clubbing and such. The last time I stepped into a clubbing event was Atlantis 10 which was last year March. I got real drunk and Desmond tried to take advantage of the situation. I'm lucky as my cousin and her boyfriend were there with me if not I would have been a GONE case.

What he did to me? He groped me and also lifted my legs up to my shoulders but then people around me stopped him from proceeding any further. I did tried to push him away but I was REALLY drunk and didn't had the strength to do it.

The next day when I sober up, I confronted him and he denied everything.

I wanted to let things (and our friendship) rest but recently he just have to provoke me indirectly on social media and when I even asked him to come out for a talked, he asked me to go to Cantonment. For what? LOL

I did hear many stories about him from people around me and I went to ask 1 of the victim herself and she confirmed with me.

During Atlantis10, I also heard that a guy (which I have no idea who) wanted to find problem with him as he forced another girl to make out with him.

PS: When I had access to his Facebook chats, He was trying to talk to at least 20+ girls by sending all of them "Hi" messages. He even asked for a sugar mummy. I don't have the screenshot as he revoked my access to his Facebook account.

Girls, please be careful who you call "friends", blood is definitely thicker than water. It wasn't a good experience for me but I'm very blessed that my cousin and her boyfriend were there on that day.

Whatsapp conversation were actually meant for my best friend's 21st birthday (He didn't know what happened at Atlantis10 as I didn't update him about it and he wasn't there) but then, this guy just needs to flirt in the conversation so obviously, I started being salty.

So the flaming between me and him actually stopped in the Whatsapp group on Monday, 20/02/2017 but he just had to start the ball rolling again by calling me and the other 3 of my girlfriends "Hoes" on Facebook for no reason."

LTA ENFORCEMENT ALLOWED TO PARK IN BUS LANE OR NOT?

This picture was taken on 23 Feb 2017 @ about 9:20 am along Upp. BT. Timah where the bus-lane is still in operation.

Is this bike on emergency?

Does he has the right to parked in a bus-stop or even in d bus-lane at that time?

Is LTA enforcement warden/s given special previlege?

If the above answers are a "NO", it goes to show in my opinion, a lack of proper training and lack of supervision.

I have given umpteen feedback via LTA's hotline and it seems to have fallen on deaf ear. You are policing and yet you condone your men to break d law. It speak so much of LTA.

Please do not say that these wardens are beyond your control(most rediculous answer I've gotten when I spoke to your CS); look at the vest they are wearing. I am very disappointed how deteriorated our enforcement agency has become.

HDB THREATENS NOT TO RELEASE BTO KEYS TO SINGLE MUM, MP CANNOT DO ANYTHING TO HELP

$

Dear Editor,

I would like to share with A.S.S. on the sufferings of a single mum in S'pore and the struggles in raising our children without adequate social safety net just for their basic educational expenses and roof over heads.

I am currently waiting for my 3-room BTO in Woodlands which will be ready in 2018 but HDB is already threatening not to release the keys should I fail to adhere to a payment plan that was superimposed by them due to past arrears. I am being put up at a rental flat in Chinatown and paying higher rates due to location (even though its a 1 rm flat) and MSF has rejected my application last year for help for my growing kids, stating that my salary exceeded their ceiling criteria. All these are known to HDB which repeatedly impressed they are not a charity and insist that I reexplain my situation to MSF "to be fair to other applicants". I do not know what they mean by that as HDB also knows I am using half of my $2000 odd salary to service loans that I took for my children as the CDC had in the past, rejected my application for financial assistance several times.

I sought out my MP over the failure to resolve this issue amicably with HDB and the subsequent letters faced rejection over and over again. Even my clan association which stepped in failed to get MOS Desmond Lee's attention, despite initial "assurances they will be able to do so". I then wrote to Mr Leon Pereira (whose party contested my area the other round) as a last resort as I want him to raise it in Parliament for airing but he said he "can't do much" and his party colleagues lament the fact far too many residents in Jalan Besar are facing the same problems that they simply do not have the resources to help and neither can the incumbent MPs due to the presence of their Party Whip.

I thanked Mr Pereira for listening but am really hit by the reality of Mr LKY's demise that the present PAP is unlike the past, which was much more effective in solving the predicaments of their residents. I remembered growing up in Ms Chan Choy Siong's (Cheryl Chan's aunt) constituency and whenever my mum approached her for help, she will never fail to take proactive steps in genuinely tackling the issues at hand by calling up the government servants and questioning their motives over not wanting to reasonably help her appellants. Ms Chan and so do her other party colleagues at that time, does not believe in writing useless petitions and waiting for their template replies. Nowadays when writing to your MPs, one usually gets a generic response asking to visit their MPSes and the grassroots then decide who gets to see the MP or not.

I feel that this tripartite thingy and the clan associations are all putting up Kulit Wayangs that they are listening as your highly paid 'representatives' but is in reality, toothless to convince their taskmasters to help you, forgetting that you are their paymaster! #waitingfor2020

PETITION TO RETAIN SUNGEI ROAD MARKET, BOUND TO END IN FAILURE

$

Dear A.S.S. Editor

About 200 people have so far signed a petition calling on the authorities to either retain or conserve the Sungei Road flea market. This petition was started by Mr Koh Ah Koon, 76, the president of the Association for the Recycling of Second Hand Goods.

He said that he will continue to collect signatures for the petition, until the day the Sungei Road flea market is supposed to close down, which is in July. The market was cited by one signatory as a venue that provides the elderly hawkers a legitimate source of income and can be seen as an engagement programme for seniors - not that different from those run by community centres. The area in Sungei Road had already been earmarked for residential use.

As far as things go in Singapore, once the authorities have decided to reclaim back that piece of land, then there is nothing much anyone can do, whether there are 200 or 200,000 signatories on a petition. We better enjoy the one of the last surviving piece of old Singapore, before they disappear for good come this July.

S'PORE PUBLIC SERVICE SHOULD CUT SPENDING FIRST BEFORE HEAVY TAXING OF S'POREANS

$
0
0

A Singaporean man named Eddy See wrote into the mainstream media to criticize the recent slew of tax hikes dished onto Singaporeans. Having worked with Ministries and Statutory Boards and seen them work up close and personal, he noticed numerous wastage of public monies by these public servants. He observed that should an approved budget funding be under-utilized, it would risked being questioned and this made public servants spend the balance funds on unnecessary things through variation orders.

He hoped that the Government would look to themselves on how to maximise cost savings before raising taxes on Singaporeans.

"I hope ministries and statutory boards treat their allocated budgets like hard-earned monies given by one’s parents to manage. The younger generation groomed to lead the agencies must be taught the value of money. That would help to avoid wastage.

It is easy for a company in a monopolistic situation, or a government, to increase revenue because consumers and citizens have no choice if there are services they need. But we must first look at how taxpayers’ monies are spent.

In a competitive environment, a 10 per cent reduction in company expenses is easier to achieve and has a higher net margin than a 10 per cent increase in revenue. We must plug the holes and pluck the low-hanging fruits.

Having worked with ministries and statutory boards on public projects, I was shocked to see how budgets were spent.

For example, approved funding had to be spent or agencies would risk being questioned, so they chose to spend on unnecessary things via variation orders. Should not savings in projects that are managed well and executed under budget be applauded?

...

Spending money is easy but getting the most bang for the buck is more difficult. I hope the relevant authorities can address the concern about how allocated budgets are managed so as to avoid wastage."

S'PORE GIRL SHAMES ABUSIVE BF AFTER HE BORROWED $23,000 TO BUY CAR & RAN AWAY WITH OTHER GIRL

$

So today, im taking out my courage to pen this down. Please scroll on if you don't wish to read my lengthy and boring post. I've been in a toxic relationship with this guy, named Edwin Low XXX XXX, for the past 4+ years (from 2011, tho there's a numerous of pauses in between). Like in every other relationship. There are the good moments and also the bad one. I had my fair share of the bad ones.

During our relationship together, he would scold, hit and choke me whenever we quarrel. Not only that, he also throw my phone on the floor(screen crack thrice), punch a hole in my wardrobe, make a huge dent at my shoe rack, throw all my things on the floor and spoil alot of my things (makeup,portable...etc) Whenever he's unhappy he would confiscate my phone and take away my house key so i wont be able to go out of my house.

Other than being violent in this relationship. He also tried to physco me to pay most of the things for him. (car tires, brakes, shirt, jeans, shoes, food, perfume, etc..)

He would say things like,

"I do not have enough this month could you pay for me first"

"I bought you ur birthday gift for this year, where is my birthday gift for the last year and last last year?"

"I do not have enough cash on hand, could u pay for me first, i will return you when i get my pay. I don't want to use my bank account money."

After i 'helped' him paid for his stuff, he never once return the money back to me.

Thats not all.

He has been constantly asking me this,

"Are you going to leave me?"

"My parent construction company might close/bankrupt anytime."

"Are you going to help me if one day I had nothing left?"

And yes one fine day....he wanted a loan of 10k in behalf of his mom because his parents construction company don't have enough cash to pay for one of the worker's(his uncle) hospital bills.

The dumb and naive me, agreed to lend it to him and his mom. Till today, the mom deny of lending money from me. And the 小白脸 just went missing.
Other than this 10k loan. He also lend another 13k to buy a car that was supposedly mine. Firstly, we agreed that the insurance will either be under my name or my dad's name.

But on that day when we went down to apply for insurance, he keep on saying how expensive it is to put under my dad/ my name when they haven even quote us the price yet!!!!! So he just make his own decision to use his own name for the insurance and he paid for it. But also at the same time, assure that the car will be mine eventho its under his name.

Ok Long story short.... yup... after all these, he went missing till now. I cant get back my $ nor my car.

23k (SGD) to some of you might be nothing. But its my hard earn money from all the part time jobs (It is not easy and tiring) and part of the money is left for me from my late grandma to help me with my uni school fees(i didnt continue with my uni). Imagine your hard earn money just gone like that. I doubt anyone can feel me.

// Edwin Low, do you enjoy using my money & car and go around showing everyone and saying it's yours? Do you enjoy badmouthing me and act like a saint in front of your friends? I sincerely hope you get your karma soon. Money can earn back but at least I've seen who you really are. And I'm pretty sure that this isn't your first time taking girls money!

WHY DID GRAB NOT REPORT DRIVERS WHO CREATE FAKE JOB BOOKINGS TO THE POLICE?

Dear Editors,

Driver admitted creating fake jobs on Grab while driving on their platform. Driver was banned from driving for grab but grab did not report it to the police. Why is grab hiding from drivers cheating on their platform and kept quiet from the police? To hide their reputation? Or to prevent future legal harrassment?

As seen on the FB forum, there were many other drivers caught cheating on grab but grab too did not report the incident to the police.

This is scary, what security could grab provides for their passengers in use of their platform in such irresponsible action of hiding their drivers' illegal deeds? How many more wrong things did grab hide from the public about their drivers on the road? What has singapore becomes? Something needed to be done as soon as possible.

TUAS FIRE YESTERDAY WAS NOT THE FIRST ONE AFFECTING THE COMPANY

$

Dear A.S.S. Editor

So apparently the fire that razed the waste management plant in Tuas was not the first one. Reports stated that a smaller fire had occurred 5 years ago at Eco Special Waste Management, and required about 25 of its staff to be evacuated safely.

The company had released a statement that since that incident, they had spent $70 million to upgrade its facilities with new machinery. Unfortunately, even with this new machinery, it could not prevent yesterday's fire. The company should be applauded for making efforts to improve its fire safety, but at the same time, investigations must be carried out thoroughly to find out why all this still failed to prevent the massive fire.

Thankfully, out of the two fires, nobody got hurt. At the end of the day, that is the most important thing.

CPF ACTIVIST HAN HUI HUI MOCKED BY POLICE OFFICERS WHO ESCORTED HER TO PRISON

$
0
0

On 27 Jun 2016, Singapore’s state court Judge CHAY YUEN FATT made judgement against me as follows:

1. SGD$2,500 fine because “She rallied her Facebook readers”.
2. SGD$600 fine because I “made vitriolic speeches to denounce the government and various government policies”.

On 22 Feb 2017, Singapore’s high court Justice SEE KEE OON rejected my appeal and I was immediately being sent to face 5 weeks in prison for not paying the fine of $3,100.

On 22 Feb 2017 at 10am, I was at Singapore’s High Court for the appeal against the judgement made by Singapore’s state court Judge CHAY YUEN FATT.
Together with me were two elderly co-accused Ivan Koh (age 62) and Janet Low (age 57).

During the appeal hearing, I asked if it was correct to amend the charge sheet just a day before the trial? Our trial was on 13 Oct 2015, but the charge sheet was amended on 12 Oct 2015.

It was not acknowledged by us and was not brought to our attention. We only noticed that after we’ve filed our appeal, from the magistrate appeal documents, last month in Jan 2017. The response we got were “so what if amended?”

Singapore’s state court Judge CHAY YUEN FATT grounds of decisions are wrong in laws, as under the Parks and Trees regulation, he admitted that “the word “demonstration” is neither defined in the Parks and Trees Regulations nor the parent Act”.

In addition, Judge CHAY YUEN FATT also said in his grounds of decisions that “As regards the issue of who had organized the demonstration, there is no definition of “organize” in the Parks and Trees Regulations or the parent Act”.

For a law that is not defined, it is unfair to convict me when it is not based on any legal ground.

Singapore’s state court Judge CHAY YUEN FATT grounds of decisions are also wrong in facts, saying that he rejected my “allegation that she would not have been able to opt to give a speech and hold a demonstration at the same time”.

This is not an allegation but what Nparks manager Sim Bee Lan testified in court, as per day 3 page 129 of the transcript that we have bought from the state court.

It was recorded in the transcript that “On the Nparks website, there are three options, a speech, a demonstration and a performance. But a Singaporean is only allowed to choose one.”

The reason why Judge CHAY YUEN FATT convicted me was because I did not click on “demonstration” but only “speech”.

It is common sense that since I will be giving a speech at Hong Lim Park on 27 Sep 2014, I should click on “speech”.

Since the website doesn’t allow anyone to click on both “speech” and “demonstration” as testified by Nparks manager Sim Bee Lan, it is unjust to convict me using a flaw on the Nparks website registration system.

As for our public nuisance charge, Hong Lim Park speakers’ corner is the only unrestricted area for us to hold protest in Singapore.

In Singapore’s state court Judge CHAY YUEN FATT grounds of decision, he convicted us, as quoted at point 86

“I would note further that even if Han did have the approval to organize a demonstration at the speakers’ corner, the evidence showed that during the third march, she led the protesters to venture beyond the boundaries of the speakers’ corner into the sheltered area in front of the stage to confront minister of state Teo Ser Luck. In that respect, any approval to hold a demonstration at the speakers’ corner would not have applied to the protest outside the speakers’ corner.”
And “any such approval would not have afforded her a defense to the public nuisance charge in any case”.

Singapore’s state court Judge CHAY YUEN FATT convicted us because we stepped on the concrete, he said I have “venture beyond the boundaries of the speakers’ corner”.

YMCA has applied for the use of speakers’ corner, since the PAP minister and the YMCA personnel have also stepped on the concrete, does it not make sense that they should be charged for venturing beyond the boundaries of speakers’ corner too?

Or do we practice double standard in Singapore?

Given that there were about thousands of people at Hong Lim Park on 27 Sep 2014, how many Singaporeans are aware that if they stepped on the concrete to go to the toilet, they would be guilty of venturing beyond the boundary of speakers’ corner?

Especially those who were carrying flags or placards?

Also, is it logical if Singaporeans were to seek shelter at the only sheltered area at Hong Lim Park during a rain, they are to be charged and convicted for stepping on concrete for they are venturing out of the boundary of speakers’ corner?

To be violated of my rights to freedom of speech and freedom of assembly for more than 2 years, a total of 27 months is a great insult to democracy.

To be fined $3,100, and be disqualified from standing for parliamentary election, there is simply no justice in Singapore.

The entire appeal hearing lasted two hours and ended at 12pm. My belongings were taken away from me right on the spot, including my phone.

I was then made to face the wall; a body search was made and I was shackled from the back.

There is a lift inside the high court chamber and the police made me enter the lift. The entrance to the lift has an interlocking feature and additionally, the interior of the lift was separated into two sections via a sliding sectional door. I was made to enter the inner-part of the lift where an accompanying police officer locked the sliding door.

Another police officer then entered the lift on the opposite side and all three of us were stuck inside for about 5 minutes. During which, they called the control room below to get an approval for the lift to go down. They were then given a passcode to key into the lift to start the descent of the lift.

I was brought to the basement of the high court, there were a lot of prison cells, I was made to walk through a lot of passage ways. At 12pm, I was the 21st female to be sent in from the high court, which excludes the juvenile court, state court, family court etc. I was first brought into solitary confinement at the high court; the cell was just 1.5m by 2m. Inside it includes a 1m by 1m toilet, I was made to sit beside it.

By then, it was already 12:30pm. I asked if I will be given lunch, the lunch in prison was supposed to be at 11am. Since I entered at 12pm, all the lunches at high court were already distributed and they started signing documents for me to be transferred to the state court.

The whole process took another half an hour, by the time the documentation was over it was already 1pm. I was shackled and made to walk through all the passage ways.

Basically, walking in circles, because it’s back to the exact same spot and seeing the exact same police officers. By the time I went into the prison van, it was 1:30pm.

The prison van is separated into three parts. The front for the driver and another police, the middle for me alone while the back was for another police officer. They spun around the basement before exiting from the gate between The Adelphi and the high court.

After exiting, they went past Hong Lim Park and said “because of this park you’re now going to prison, is it worth it?” Another officer added “because of Singaporeans? Hahaha, you’re now going to prison to see who really run this country.”

CAR PASSENGER OPENED DOOR ON THE ROAD, CAUSED DEATH OF MOTORCYCLIST

Dear A.S.S. Editor

What is wrong with road users on Singapore? Do they think they own the road? Sometimes, does even any sort of common sense left in such people?

I read with sadness and anger at the news that a motorcyclist died after he collided with an open door of a car. The motorcyclist died on Wednesday night after crashing into a car door, which a passenger opened without warning. The accident happened at at about 9.30pm along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 towards Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 on Wednesday night. What possessed the passenger to open the car door suddenly? In fact, the passenger had even opened the car door twice!

His brainless act had caused one death on the road. Police have arrested the man, whose identity was not yet made public. What an idiot!

<Complaint by Sandiya>

I am a single mom with medical problems and unemployed with two children. Currently my elder one is not staying with me due to some misunderstanding.

I am staying with my son in a HDB rental flat. For the past eight to ten months my ex husband has not been paying my maintenance money properly, due to that I ended up not paying my rental money and now I am in serious problem .

HDB has asked me to settle the full outstanding arrears of $2000 immediately by 31st March. If failed to do so, I will have to vacate my rental unit by 31st March. I hereby seek your help.

If you could help me in anyway to have a fund raising or some donors to settle my rental outstanding fees, if not I and my son got nowhere to go, no relatives and friends to help.

Thank you. Looking forward to your reply asap. My bro in laws aunty Jessyca Devi recommended you.

VITRIOL & SCORN HEAPED UPON DR STUART KOE IS UNFAIR, WHY NOT HELP HIM INSTEAD?

<Credits: GLBT Voices Singapore>

I received many messages about Dr Stuart Koe’s court case in the news. The sentiments run the gamut of shock, dismay to even self-indulgent gloating. I won’t be posting any of them. In the purposes of full disclosure, let me explain why.

I first met Stuart after my ORD. For some unfathomable reason, Stuart saw past the angry youth who worked as a full time dancer, as someone with a potential in marketing. He offered me my first ‘proper’ job as part of the team in Fridae and my life changed since then. Today I’m a professional in the communications industry, working with global brands both domestically and regionally. The wealth of experience I have garnered since would not have been possible if Stuart hadn’t seen something in me worth developing.

And it was my time in Fridae that seeded my involvement with the gay community. Being part of such a groundbreaking endeavour opened my eyes to the possibilities of the gay community in Singapore and I have never left that behind. When I look back on that period of time, I marvel at Stuart’s vision, which was a little ahead of its time. Although gay personals sites were a dime a dozen by the time Fridae sputtered out, none really came close in terms of creating real communities both locally and in the region. And it’s that sort community forging that I find lacking in today’s world of apps. In both the gay community and myself personally, Stuart always had an interesting and optimistic view, one he sought to uplift and did, through his many contributions.

Which is why the vitriol and scorn heaped upon him now is disappointing. And it cuts both ways. I wish we could have been there for him. Sometimes when someone is such a public figure, it is all the more harder for one to reach out for help and whether he knew it or not, he probably could have used some. And that goes for all of us within the community, a label we are so happy to pay lip service to but practise so little in reality.

We all know about the rampant drug use amongst us but what else? It is all too easy to be dismissive of those who have fallen prey to drugs as people who are weak but who amongst us are not?

We all have our private trials and tribulations. We all have our flaws, and our failures. We are not helping those amongst us in need, if we all pretend that there isn’t a problem, or simply write each other off.

In the last few years of my work within the community, I have been confronted by those who feel that talking about such issues somehow “paints a bad picture” of the gay community, and some of the more honest and raw stories here do us all a disservice. Probably has to do with the Asian mindset of not wanting to air one’s dirty laundry in public (in this case the “public” being a slightly homophobic society), but my take is that talking about such issues makes us all more mature as a community.

We could all use a little more sympathy and empathy amongst us, not just because we are gay or lesbian, but simply because we are all human. So if you know someone who could benefit from some help today, or if you could use some yourself, don’t wait. Reach out. If you don’t know how, there are excellent resources like Oogachaga or Action for Aids. Or simply write in and I’ll lend a listening ear.

XOXO
GC
