FIRM POLICE ACTION HAS PULLED MANY WAYWARD TEENS BACK ON TRACK, DO WE WANT TO BREAK IT?

Dear All Singapore Stuff,

I refer to the public concern about Benjamin Lim's unfortunate death. At the same age of 14, i was one of the many that plain clothes officers bought away from school to cantonment for a interview, donkey years ago. I saw a few more students about the same age in the CID office when I arrived.

Talk about policing procedures? This is definitely nothing new. I believe some of here have the same encounter as me which was "normal" for troubled teenagers. I was even given an official warning in writing by the police at the age of 14. When you are suspected of a crime, you are obliged to assist with investigation without any resistance, at any age. Whether or not a minor, old folks, adult, man or women. The purpose of police work is to prevent crimes and or, stop it at the earliest.

This is why our country is listed as one of the safest city in the world, thanks to the systems and procedures. If the boy is clean, he could have stand still for himself than ending his life. His already 14, not 4. Kids this generations are much matured compared to my time. I've been through this at the same age, just like many others.

When you are not sure how the system works, don't argue about the procedures. It had been like this, for decades. And from my personal account, I've seen countless teenagers being pulled back to the right track just in time. This is just a sad case of a boy committing suicide. Let him go in peace.

STOP EATING IN YOUR CARS TO AVOID A COCKROACH VILLAGE INFESTATION

Dear ASS,

I set a cockroach trap on the floor of my front passenger seat hoping to catch 1 or 2 creepy crawlies after I saw a few insects running about in my car. To my shock, when I removed the trap one month later, there was a village of cockroaches found in the trap. There were 11 to 12 media roaches and many other small little baby ones.

I hope this photo will serve as a warning to all car owners to regularly check your cars for pests especially if you allow your children to eat in the car. This is what can happen.

JC STUDENT: HOMEWORK ALREADY SO TIRING, WHY IRRITATE US WITH CLEANING DUTY?

$

<Credits: Jacob Tan>

Recently the new Acting Minister for Education Ng Chee Meng has embarked on his ‘new’ cleaning programme. “Getting the kids involved in such daily activities is really a good way to get them to learn personal responsibility and even social responsibility,” said Mr Ng.

As a student within the school system for 11 years, these are my views and opinions of this new initiative – it is entirely irrelevant and unnecessary. There are already existing initiatives on the ground to cover such things.

Generally there are initiatives on the ground that have been in place to maintain cleanliness in a school. Many would be familiar with the duty roster put in place at the beginning of the year which has to be supervised by the class monitor. Programmes such as this already ensure that students have a sense of belonging, sense of hygiene and a sense of responsibility.

In addition such a programme is rather feeble, because it is not as far-reaching. In fact there are other programmes such as the Happy Toilets programme, which’s purposes are to inculcate good toilet etiquette, personal hygiene habits and social responsibility in students.

Furthermore every single school throughout the island, regardless of if the school is a neighbourhood school or a top school, would have had such initiatives or programmes like the Project Buddy Clean in Marsiling Primary School. As such, this programme for all it is hailed, does very little.

Students already have a lot on their plates and don’t need to be further irritated by such a ‘cleaning programme’. Schools are primarily an environment to grow as a person. With a mountain of work as an A-Level student and having to sleep at 12am, there is very little I can relate to being forced up to clean up

A lot is expected from Singaporean students as it is. At the tender age of 12, they have to take an exam which determines the kind of people they will mix with in life. At 16 they take another exam which determines their future. We do not need another ‘social responsibility building’ project to be thrust at us.

It is already very tiring for me to deal with my mountain of homework. This school cleaning programme will only be another KPI (key-performance-index) schools and the Ministry of Education (MOE) will use to promote itself and its staff. I am just tired of being used by schools and MOE in this manner.

The ‘school cleaning programme’ is perhaps the first initiative the new Acting Minister for Education (Schools) kick-started after he took office. But instead of this cleaning programme, the Minister could as one of the first acts after assuming office, have come out with a programme to ease the burden of school students and that would have been better appreciated by us students.

That is one programme students like me are still waiting for.

BEWARE OF SCDF REGULAR WHO CHEATS MONEY OFF KIND & INNOCENT WOMEN

$

Dear All Singapore Stuff,

ROCHINO WEE - BEWARE OF THIS A*HOLE BASTARD!!! CHEAT WOMEN'S MONEY!!!!!

I am trying to track down this A*HOLE who has been owing me money since December 2015!! His name is ROCHINO WEE (he blocked me but you can find him on Facebook), in his mid-20s, h/p: 93962837, WeChat ID: rochinooo. Works as a sign-on regular with SCDF, I think his camp is at Boon Lay area. He lives in Whampoa/Balestier area.

I got to know this BASTARD through WeChat. We started chatting and became friends. He shared with me a lot about his past, how he used to be a Satanist and did a lot of bad things, how he had become a changed person and converted to Christianity, after a miracle happened to him after he prayed to God for help when he was in really deep shit.

After a few days, he started gave me some sob story about needing money because he lost his IC & SCDF ID, how it was going to cost him hundreds to get them replaced. Out of kindness, I lent him a total of $220, which he promised to return to me on his next pay day in January 2016. Well, it's March 2016 now, and I haven't received a single cent from him yet!!

At first, he would still reply to my texts whenever i asked for my money back, but he'd give me all sorts of cock & bull excuses why he couldn't return it, sometimes to the point of being extremely rude!! First, it was lost IC & SCDF ID. Then h/p spoil and needed to buy a new one. Next was lost ATM card at Zouk, need to go to the bank to apply for a new one & it would take 5-7 working days for them to send it to him by registered post. When i asked why he couldn't get it on the spot, he said he'd lost his IC again so the bank couldn't verify his account!! Would u believe him if it were u??!! For the past few weeks, he didn't even bother to reply to my texts and even blocked me from calling him!!!

$220 may seem like a small sum of money to some people, but to me, it's not about the amount. It's all about PRINCIPLES and INTEGRITY now!!! If he was a handicapped person or had a huge family to support, i might even treat it as a charitable donation and give him the money. But no, he is young, fit and healthy (as you can see from his pics), and he's an only son!!

Can go to Zouk to party with his colleagues, but got no money to return to me??!!! I heard from a friend of a friend that he's been known to go around cheating money!! Call himself a man??? Call himself a human being by cheating money from innocent, kindhearted women??!!! I'd rather donate the money to a charity for dogs, than to give my money to this THING which can't even compare to DOG SHIT!!!!

PLEASE share this post around!!! PLEASE help to prevent other women from becoming victims of his scams as well!!! who knows how many have already fallen prey to his scams!!! DON"T LET THE NEXT VICTIM BE YOUR DAUGHTER, SISTER, FRIEND, OR EVEN POSSIBLY YOUR WIFE!!!! Such a throw face kind of guy, let's make sure he can't hold his head up anymore, in front of everyone who knows him, including his family and his friends!!!

TOASTBOX AT TTSH SERVED TEA MADE WITH SUSPECTED SPOILT CONDENSED MILK

Dear editors,

My colleagues and I visited Toast Box at TTSH during lunch time and ordered Teh-C Kosong. The staff told us that they do not have evaporated milk and requested us to consider a change of order. We then changed the order to Teh Siew Dai.

This is the first time I see Teh Siew Dai like this. It seems the milk is spoilt. When questioned, the staff said this is normal for Teh Siew Dai... Seriously?!

PETITION AGAINST CALIFORNIA FITNESS UNETHICAL SALES PRACTICES

$
0
0

Dear Editors,

Please help to sign the petition to help the victims to get back their refund!

https://www.change.org/p/ministry-of-trade-and-industry-singapore-get-ca...

Purpose of petition - The primary purpose of this petition is to request the Ministry of Trade and Industry's assistance in getting California Fitness Singapore to give pro-rated refunds to its victims.

California Fitness has fraudulently obtained membership fees by legalistically exploiting the terms and conditions of a contract that is inherently unethical.

The secondary purpose of this petition is to raise awareness amongst consumers regarding the dangers of committing to contracts offered by unscrupulous business operators such as California Fitness Singapore. Sudden closure of main branch California Fitness Singapore closed their main branch at 391A Orchard Road, #08-00 Ngee Ann City, 238873 on 5 February 2016. The company only gave two weeks notice. The company gave no explanation for the sudden closure. The company does not have plans to re-open a branch in a similar location. Bad business practices California Fitness sells memberships based on pre-paid contracts. The terms and conditions of the contract contains a legal loophole in California Fitness’ favour. A clause in the membership contract states that California Fitness is not obligated to refund payments if they are able to reallocate members to a club within 10km in the event of closure.

While not illegal per se, the way California Fitness has chosen to conduct itself constitutes bad business practices by deliberately betraying misleading consumers based on a contractual technicality. Both new and existing customers have been defrauded by California Fitness’ unethical action. New and renewing members defrauded Members who signed new contracts or who renewed contracts specifically for the Orchard branch were deliberately not forewarned of the impending closure prior to signing new contracts. Sales staff have been selling memberships to the Orchard club right up to the very day of the announcement!

California Fitness knowingly sold contracts based on the understanding that the Orchard club was the main or only attraction for these victims, then proceeded to close the club immediately after. The victims of this underhanded sales tactic now have no legal recourse to getting refunds. Admittedly, California Fitness has compensated for the closure of the Orchard branch by granting access to other branches.

However, please take into consideration that many of these new victims expressly made it clear to the sales staff prior to signing up that they only required access to the Orchard Road club and had no need of any of the other locations. While not illegal per se, California has deliberately misled the customer. Existing members shortchanged Existing members of the club committed to memberships based on the understanding that they would be able to access four clubs. With the closure of the main club, existing members have in essence paid for four clubs but now only have access to three.

Moreover, the reduced quantity of facilities are now shared amongst even more customers. Admittedly, the terms of California Fitness' membership contract promises access to all clubs rather than specifically four clubs. While not illegal per se, this is clearly a deliberate exploitation of the terms of the contract at the expense of the customer. Complaints to CASE Many victims have already lodged individual complaints with the Consumer’s Association of Singapore (CASE) against California Fitness on this issue. California Fitness has refused to meet with CASE’s officers for mediation.

Call to action We hereby call upon the Ministry of Trade and Industry to intercede on the behalf of California Fitness’ many victims. A precedent needs to be set in order to prevent unscrupulous businesses such as California Fitness from soiling Singapore’s reputation as a world-class commercial hub. In order to maintain Singapore’s status as a global centre of trade and industry adhering to the highest ethical standards, companies such as California Fitness should not be allowed to exploit consumers’ trust by conducting themselves in such a blatantly unethical and fraudulent manner.

BENJAMIN LIM'S FATHER: CALLOUS SCH COUNSELLOR DID NOT CARE ABOUT MY SON'S WELL-BEING

$

The father of Benjamin Lim has disputed the facts laid out by MOE and Acting Minister for Education Ng Chee Meng. He claims that the school counsellor did not call his wife to check on Benjamin Lim's well-being. Instead, Benjamin's father said that the counsellor merely informed his wife that after a school meeting, Benjamin would be excluded from the school camp.

Before his wife could ask any further questions, the counsellor had hung up. Throughout their conversation, there was no questions asked about Benjamin and zero questions about Benjamin's well-being.

In response to the grieving father's latest comments against MOE, the Ministry declined to comment further as the matter is now subject to a Coroner's Inquiry but empathised with the family in this time of grief.

AN ENCOUNTER WITH A RACIST FATHER & HIS KIDS AT THE HAWKER CENTRE

$

Dear ASS Editors,

This is a disgusting racist encountered faced by our fellow Singaporean in the hawker center. After 50 years of multi racial harmony and nationhood, such racist still exist in Singapore. Thoroughly do not understand why parents do not correct their kids and allow such racist thinking to persist.

This was his unfortunate encounter in full

"Had an interesting lunch. Someone paid me $20 to move to another table because his young children don't want to sit and share the table with 'a Malay man' even though I was already there eating halfway through and they were the ones who came later.

Took the money, finished my food, and gave it to the cleaning lady instead. And told the guy what an expensive way to raise racist kids."

Shame on this parent who does not have the sense to teach the right values to his children. Pity the children really.

LOCAL INTERNET SLOW AS SEVERAL UNDERSEA CABLES WERE CUT?

On February 29th, several undersea cables in the Asia Pacific region experienced major fiber cuts. These undersea cables are responsible for carrying a significant portion of Singapore's international internet traffic, and this loss of capacity has caused recent incidents of increased latency and packet loss in our Singapore datacenter during peak times when congestion is most likely.

Unfortunately, there is currently no estimated time-to-resolution available from the undersea cable operators. We will update this post when we have more information.

AUTHORITIES NEED TO DEAL WITH THE SOCIAL PROBLEM OF IMMORAL ACTIVITIES AMONGST FT

$
0
0

Dear All Singapore Stuff,

I am filing this report as my concern to what is happening every Sunday at our parks and public places. I hope the authorities will look into this issues.

With Singapore economic boom and the influx of thousands of foreign workers, we are experiencing a culture shock of unSingaporean behaviors and attitudes among our guests workers. Every Sunday, Paya Lebar and Lucky Plaza have become a 'flesh market' for thousands of Banglas to gather, stalk, prey and pick maids for their lust and sexual desires. Toa Payoh park, Botanical Gardens, Sentosa are full of Banglas and maids. The open space between Kallang Airport Drive and Kallang Airport Way is littered with couples, Banglas and maids. Openly displaying ‘intimate and sensuous’ behaviours.

Also check-out every Sunday at the East Coast Park, Carpark D, Banglas and maids pitch tents for their 'sex love nests’ for their immoral activities. Right in a public recreational park and beach areas that are meant for family outings. I am sure making love in a public area is a punishable offence.

These foreign workers have displayed behaviors that have been very disconcerting and caused unease and disgust among Singaporeans. As a family oriented nation these behaviors have caused disgust and unease among Singaporeans, MOM’s inaction are encouraging promiscuous and adulterous behaviours among foreign workers. Action must be taken to apprehend these sex predators, curtailed such abuses and protect our maids.

This is a social problem that needs to be addressed by the authorities. Inaction by the authorities only encourages promiscuity in Singapore’s family oriented society. There must be guidelines about spending their off days, rules and regulations not to abuse and misbehave. If nothing is done, then this will continue to happen indefinitely, Banglas will become more bolder and more innocent maids will fall victims indefinitely.

LOANSHARK THREATENS TO CHOP MAN AFTER HE PAYS UP HIS DEBT IN FULL

$
0

<Credits: harrassedbyloanshark>

A series of unfortunate events and being the fool that I was, I gave a loanshark my details over the phone. And said loanshark transferred $600 SGD to my bank account. I chased him for repayment details: $960 SGD a week later (29th Feb)

On the repayment day, said ah long gave me a bank account number and the message "make defer payment by 6pm". 6pm was less than an hour away, so I rushed to the nearest cash deposit machine and deposited $960.

Here is where the fun begins. The loanshark called me and asked why the f**k did I deposit so much. Now the account is frozen because I transferred the full amount. I was supposed to magically know that "defer payment" means $200 - $300, and not the full amount (details: the acct had $5760, now I made it $6720, thus frozen).

He screamed at me, saying that his boss will kill him. And that subsequently he will make my life miserable. Sent me a video of them setting a flat on fire.

He threatened me, and asked me to pay half of the $6720, which I rejected. It sounded like a really bad story to get more money out of me. You lent me $600, which I did not need. And I paid you $960, that should be the end.

I then proceeded to make a police report, who advised me to ignore the guy and not to pick up his calls anymore.

Here's where I fucked up: I thought that the ah long was lying. But a banker friend then clarified my doubts: an account will indeed get frozen if multiple small transactions are detected.

The ah long may be actually telling the truth (he declared rather proudly that they are ah longs over the phone, and that his boss will chop me or something along those lines).

Today is the 3rd day, after 2 sleepless nights, they are still calling me.

But after realising that the guy may be telling the truth, honestly I did feel a tinge of guilt. It has since dissipated but it's like, all of us are just out to make a living. And even if it's true, I don't believe that he can't get the bank account unfrozen.

Not sure what I should do. Now every night I just go home and hope that they won't burn my house.

REAL STARTING SALARIES FOR UNI GRADS DROPS 5% IN LAST 8 YEARS?

$
0
0

I refer to the article “Higher starting salaries for local fresh graduates in 2015: Survey” (Channel News Asia, Mar 2).

It states that “The mean gross monthly salary among fresh graduates employed in full-time positions increased S$135 from 2014, according to results from the latest Joint Graduate Employment Survey released on Wednesday (Mar 2).

Individuals who graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU) in 2015 had a gross monthly pay of S$3,468, compared to S$3,333 in 2014.

Meanwhile, the median gross monthly salary among fresh graduates employed in full-time permanent employment was S$3,300 in 2015, compared to S$3,200 from two years ago, the survey showed.”

According to the Singapore Yearbook of Manpower Statistics 2014 (page H30) – the median gross monthly starting salary of university graduates in full-time permanent employment was $2,750 in 2007.

Graduates’ real starting pay declined 5% last 8 years?

Does this mean that their starting salaries increased by about 20 per cent ($3,300 divided by $2,750) in the last eight years?

Since inflation was about 25 per cent from 2007 (CPI 79.65) to 2015 (CPI 99.5) – does it mean that in real terms – their starting salaries declined by about -5 per cent (25 – 20%) in the last eight years?

PENNANT'S WORLD CLASS FREE KICK RESCUES A POINT FOR MISFIRING TAMPINES

$

<Photo credits Leo Shengwei>

HOME UNITED 1
(Ken Ilso 35)
TAMPINES ROVERS 1
(Jermaine Pennant 39)

Twenty minutes into the match, and there was still a long line for tickets outside Bishan Stadium. Half an hour after the game between Home United and Tampines Rovers, there was still a queue of cars on a single lane waiting to exit.

These are scenes that have long been dissociated with the S.League but with a year-best attendance of 3,551 fans - among them FAS president Zainudin Nordin, S.League CEO Lim Chin and national coach Bernd Stange - the local professional football league's revival is well and truly on.

And it goes to show that the best way to put bums on seats at the stadiums is not free potato chips but pedigree. The two great goals were definitely worth the price of the match ticket and the two scorers in an almost tempestuous match have played at the highest level, in addition to 12 Singaporeans who have been capped at the senior level.

Home United's Ken Ilso had played and scored for Fortuna Dusseldorf in the Bundesliga as recently as the 2012/13 season and the 29-year-old Dane left former team-mate Noh Rahman for dead in the 35th minute before slamming the ball past Izwan Mahbud from a tight angle.

Just four minutes later, former Arsenal and Liverpool star Jermaine Pennant curled a superb 25m free-kick beyond Hyrulnizam Jum'aat. But then, the expected goal fest stopped and at times the match resembled a slug fest.

Despite scoring the equaliser, the 33-year-old Englishman was a picture of frustration as he frequently gesticulated to his coach V Sundramoorthy and his team-mates that they were not up to the mark.

While the Stags welcomed their 10th different scorer in five competitive matches, they just could not live up to their three goal-per-game average. Sundramoorthy brought on just Fazrul Nawaz for the ineffective Billy Mehmet, which meant that the likes of Irwan Shah, Mustafic Fahrudin, Christopher van Huizen, Fabian Kwok and Hafiz Sujad were overlooked for the supersub role.

Home United probably edged the contest, even though LionsXII alumni Zulfahmi Arifin and Faris Ramli were disappointing, and should have collected their first win, but substitute Irfan Fandi's 80th-minute header off Ilso's corner was cleared off the line by Ismadi Mukhtar.

The result meant that although hot favourites Tampines Rovers remained unbeaten, they also failed to depose league leaders Albirex Niigata and are two points behind in third place, after Geylang International moved into second with a 0-0 draw against Balestier Khalsa.

Home United are in a worse predicament as they lie seventh in the nine-team league, winless after three games having thrown away the lead in two of those matches.
While this was no high-scoring humdinger, even the best leagues in the world have boring matches, and this wasn't even close to being a snoozefest.

The signs are pointing in a sustained upswing in the S.League's fortunes, at least at the Jurong West and Bishan stadiums, with the JP effect still running strong, while Ilso and the two good-looking Fandi sons can get fans in a tizzy.

Even Home United coach Philippe Aw was able to appreciate his opponents' marquee signing in defeat, and said: "We came into this game knowing how fast Tampines' counter attacks are with Jordan Webb and Jermaine Pennant. We sat back and conceded possession to them. We worked on the counters as well and thats how Ken got his goal.

"But the inexperience of our players, knowing our opponent play a high pressure game and still persisting with short passes, that's when we conceded the free-kick and we've got to give credit to Pennant for a well-taken free-kick."

Pennant himself is clearly not here for an Indian summer or a holiday, and urged his team-mates to justify their title favourite tags.

"It is a bit frustrating to drop two points here with the quality that we've got," he said. "But it's not based on one or two games. There are 24 matches this season. We are still undefeated and only two points behind Albirex. We just have to start stringing some wins together."

HOME UNITED: Hyrulnizam Juma'at, Juma'at Jantan, Abdil Qaiyyim, Shahrin Saberin, Sirina Camara, Song Ui Yong, Azhar Sairudin (Irfan Fandi 74), Zulfahmi Arifin (Sufianto Salleh 91), Aqhari Abdullah (Ikhsan Fandi 82), Faris Ramli, Ken Ilso
TAMPINES ROVERS: Izwan Mahbud, Ismadi Mukhtar, Noh Rahman, Afiq Yunos, Shakir Hamzah, Izzdin Shafiq, Shahdan Sulaiman, Yasir Hanapi, Jordan Webb, Jermaine Pennant, Billy Mehmet (Fazrul Nawaz 79)

PRC WHO DO NOT EMBRACE S'PORE'S SOCIAL NORM SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO LIVE HERE

Dear Editors,

With the influx of PRCs into Singapore, I realised the vast gap in social values that they have from the Singaporean Chinese. We, who are borned, worked, strived and lived in Singapore for so many years, have have developed and share certain social 'norms'. We have also learnt to accept and respect Singaporeans of other ethnicities as our equal. PRCs from China only know one ethnicity - chinese

Just because PRCs looked like Singaporean Chinese , they are NOT the same. Do not assume they can just 'blend in'. It is shocking to find them hanging laundry in the public playground, let their children urinate wherever they like, my neighbor (PRC) even hang their laundry all the way in front of my main door, and now they are showing symptoms of racism.

How is Singapore going to move forward with such impending social issues? People get together as one because we hold the same values, not because we 'look' alike. I hope the PRCs learn our Singapore values if not, these social tensions errupt. If not best they do not enter our country.

HIGH COURT: SAF OFFICERS IMMUNED FROM BEING SUED FOR NEGLIGENT DEATHS & INJURIES

The Singapore High Court threw out the lawsuit brought against the SAF by the family of Dominique Sarron Lee who died in 2012 after an allergic reaction to smoke grenades during a military exercise. Dominique's family sued his platoon commander and chief safety officer alleging negligence on their part.

Using a provision in the Government Proceedings Act, the SAF defendants argued that they have immunity from being sued for negligence for death and injuries as the acts happened in service.

Judicial Commissioner Kanna Ramesh accepted the defendant's arguments and agreed that the provisions applied in this case, rendering the lawsuit invalid as the accused were indemnified from prosecution while in service.

On 17 April 2012, Private Dominique Lee suffered breathing difficulties and passed out after an exercise where 6 smoke grenades were thrown. He was evacuated to Sungei Geond Medical Centre before being transferred to NUH where he was pronounced dead that very day at about 2pm. The coroner's inquiry found he died from acute allergic reaction to zince chloride, a compound found in smoke grenades used during the military exercise. It was later found that the number of smoke grenades used exceeded the recommended safety limits.
