The AVA is investigating a case of gelatin-like substance being found in the heads of prawns bought at a Sengkang wet market last week. A 40 year old aunty discovered the gelatin blobs when washing the 25 prawns she bought from Rivervale Plaza.
When she cooked the prawns in boiling water, the gelatin hardened into solid white rubber subtance. She remembered reading online articles of unethical seafood suppliers injecting gelatin chemicals into prawns to increase their weight for a higher selling price.
According to Lee Boon Cheow, President of the Singapore Fish Merchants' General Association, this was the first reported case of gelatin substance found in seafood sold in Singapore. Prawns are typically bought from Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.
