I am messaging you at this hour bcause of your idiotic staff who took my order lightly. I bought a drink cost me $8.40 I asked for strong flavour and more plenty of whip cream. I told them to help expedite the making of the beverage. But the barista was like not focusing even though I said my last bus within 8mins might be coming! I tried the drink on the way to the bus stop and decided to return for a refund. Your cashier was very very slow at returning of the money and at 2plus there's no other customer! I chased after the bus and fell and was hurt your staff were the worst ones I even encountered! The drunk was diluted in terms of icyness and flavour was not strong! Yet I paid extra to get more stronger flavur

MAN BUYS DEFECTIVE COMPUTER FROM COURTS, FAILS TO GET HELP FROM THEM

Dear A.S.S,

I write to share with you my horrible experience with Courts MegaStore (singapore).

I bought a computer from Courts Tampines on 24 Apr 2016, cash and carry. When i opened it two days later. The windows started to load the standard initial windows setup process. The computer screen black out before the process could be completed. To cut the story short, i tried a few more times including swapping in a confirmed working monitor. No helps.

I called Courts hotline 1800 222 6868 I found on their website No one was there to answer phone call. I left a voice message with my details. No calls. I called same number few hours later, and was asked to leave voice mail again. I did, with my details again. No returning calls.

I was busy next day. When i called another day later. No one there again, i left my details again.

it has been 4 weeks after my 3 calls, i have not received any response from Courts. I am very surprised a long established company has such an inferior after-sale customer support. Sob! Sob!

This is first time i bought something from Courts and having product problem.

I will not be buying any product from them potentially can be faulty. If you buy anything from Courts, you probably will be fine if there is no issue with the product. Otherwise, be prepared of having same horrible faith as me.

DO NOT USE ANSARI FROM SEVEN EVENTZ FOR YOUR WEDDING

$

Dear A.S.S,

Never ever think of choosing Seven Eventz Ansari as your wedding event !

We hired Ansari from Seven Eventz for our hall deco, DJ and Bangra dancers and made 90% of the payment before the big day, but on my big day he had screwed up everything, from the lighting entrance, entrance canopy, stairway deco, backdrop lighting, fairy lights and etc.

I had also booked Bangra dancers for my 2nd walk-in through Ansari but they never turned up and screwed up my entire walk-in. I was Very disappointed!

On the actual day around 3pm he called me and informed me that he won't be around at the venue later in the evening as he had an emergency to attend to and told us to check with his DJ if we needed any help at the event but the DJ knew nothing. My dad was trying to call him several times during the event to ask him about the Bangra dancers but he was Uncontactable.

After missing for the entire event on the 26/12/2016, he contacted us the next day for the remaining payment that was about $2.5k. We refused to pay him the remaining, therefore he refused to pay the wedding cake company also and deducted $500 from the total amount we had to pay him.

($500 was the amount that i have transferred him on the 26/12/2016, afternoon as I had to pay my wedding cake lady for the wedding cake upon collection at the venue and since all my family members were very busy and won't be there to collect the cake at the venue m, I transferred the total amount for the cake to Ansari and told him to pay it to the cake delivery man upon collection at the hall but he didn't as he was not at the venue at all.

When the cake delivery man contacted him, Ansari said he will transfer the amount to him by midnight the same day but didn't do it as promised. When he was contacted the next day again, he gave reasons like he lost his atm card and he will transfer the amount soon but didn't make any transfer at all and after 3 days of chasing, the wedding cake company contacted me for the payment and I ended up paying them.)

He tried contacting my dad several times for the remaining payment but he refused to answer his calls and he WhatsApp me for the payment too and even threatened to sue us. We told him to go ahead as we have all the evidences and contract papers given by him stating the services he should provide and how he had failed to provide the services promised by him. We really trusted him but ended up screwing up everything and still have the face to ask for the remaining payment!

When we say treat this wedding like ur family wedding we really mean it and I feel that every wedding Decorater must put their full heart and mind and treat it like their own family wedding when they are fulfilling the tasks! You are being paid for what you are doing, make sure it's a proper job done! DON'T just work for money!

Say no to Seven Eventz and Ansari for your big day!

UNEXPIRED SUNMAID RAISINS HAVE WORMS INSIDE, LOOK OUT BEFORE FEEDING YR CHILD

<Facebook complaint by Jamie Chan>

Dear mummy friends, if you give this brand of raisins to your little ones beware of worms! My little boy was finishing one small box and towards the end I noticed the black specks and worms. Went home to check the rest in my pantry and also got worms. It still has almost 1 year before the expiration date. Now hoping he won't get a stomachache

Edited: someone suggested that even the sealed boxes need to be stored in an air tight container and maybe In fridge to prevent this from happening.

DR CHEE HAS HIS FLAWS BUT IS STILL BETTER THAN OTHER OPPOSITION CANDIDATES

$

Dear All Singapore Stuff,

I agree that SDP's 38.8% is not such a great result for a by election, by local standards. A WP candidate would have broken the 40% barrier, I feel.

However, I would not say that Dr Chee has to step down from politics altogether. So what if he has gotten only 38.8% in a by election, and so what if it is actually his best showing after 5 tries? Can you imagine, if it had been Kenneth Jeyaretnam, Goh Meng Seng, or that ex-model from NSP? Yeah, they’d struggle to secure 33.3% or one third of the vote. Dr Chee pales in comparison to the WP, but I’d say that with this result, he shows that he has more viable a party and profile that many of the kachang putih parties out there. Even more viable than pardon me, the Chiams. Put Lina Chiam in Bukit Batok and I’d say she will not better Dr Chee’s 38.8%. This is in spite of the respect people have for Chiam See Tong, and what Dr Chee might have done to him.

So come GE 2020, Chee Soon Juan will probably find it hard to win in Bukit Batok, unless the PAP’s stock falls to 2011 levels, and he ups his ground game seriously. I also feel that he needs to confront his past head on, really put it to discussion and let the people know why he needed to do what he did, as opposed to saying he’s being “assassinated” and leaving it at that all the time.

So yes, in my book, he remains unelectable and for good reasons. But I don’t see why he should be stepping down. There are far worse opposition candidates who will unashamedly put themselves up for the running, and who cling on to their pathetic secretary generalships in their rag tag parties. Why should he not?

HDB NEEDS TO COME CLEAN ON ITS BLATANT POLITICAL PARTISAN ACTION

$

<Blog Post by RenChoo>

MP for Aljunied, Mr Faisal, had written a letter to HDB on behalf of one of his residents, Mr Ng, about the spalling concrete in the resident’s flat. Spalling concrete is a common issue with older HDB flats. It is a natural deterioration process.

Spalling concrete. Photo source from HDB and ST

Spalling concrete. Photo source from HDB and ST

Fellow WP member, Bernard Chen posted HDB’s appalling response to the Mr Faisal’s letter.

Source: Bernard Chen's Facebook page

Source: Bernard Chen’s Facebook page

From the response, it seemed that HDB was initially reluctant to help the resident with the cost of repair the spalling concrete. This was even though Mr Faisal, the elected MP of the area, had written in them. But HDB eventually agreed to co-pay 50% of the costs of repairing the spalling concrete. This only happened after HDB informed Mr Shamsul, the adviser to AljuniedGRC Grassroots Organisations. Mr Shamsul was member of the PAP team that contested in AljuniedGRC and lost to the WP team that Mr Faisal was in.

The whole series of events is utterly disturbing for two reasons.

First, what gave HDB the right to inform Mr Shamsul of this case? I would have thought that anything that the MP wrote to HDB about was written in confidence. The information that the MP gives to HDB is given with the understanding that it would only be shared within HDB. So did HDB seek the permission of Mr Ng, the owner of the flat, before doing informing Mr Shamsul, who was essentially unrelated to this case before HDB informed him? If they didn’t, isn’t HDB breach the Personal Data Protection Act?

Second, why did HDB only agree to co-pay for the repairs of the spalling concrete after Mr Shamsul asked them to assist? Shouldn’t it be that, regardless who it is who wrote in to HDB, shouldn’t HDB assist so long as the case warrants assistance? By assisting only because Mr Shamsul asked them to, HDB is clearly favouring Mr Shamsul over Mr Faisal, the elected MP.

And all along, I thought that the public service is beyond fear or favour. I had believed PM Lee when he said that the civil service is politically impartial. Guess I was wrong. I guess there are times when our public service does favour certain individuals over another. Especially when one individual is from the ruling party, while the other is from the opposition party.

I wonder how deep this rot goes. How many of our public service agencies are cronies of the PAP? Some? All? As it is, we are ranked fourth in the Economist’s crony-capitalism index, which measures how much of the wealth of the billionaires in Singapore comes from cronyism. I hope that we won’t rank as badly when it comes to political and public service cronyism.

Perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps HDB’s actions for this particular case aren’t because it is a PAP crony. Perhaps there are very good reasons why it only provides assistance when the grassroots adviser asks. If that is the case, HDB really needs to come out and explain itself clearly and convincingly – why is it in the public’s interest that HDB should only co-pay for repairing spalling concrete when the grassroots adviser asks HDB to do so?

But until HDB provides a clear and convincing explanation, it cannot blame Singaporeans for thinking that it does not act beyond fear or favour. It cannot blame Singaporeans for  thinking that it is a crony of the PAP and serves to advance the interest of the PAP rather than act for the best interest of Singaporeans.

So, HDB, care to explain yourself?

SDP HITS BACK AT SMU LAW PROF FOR SLANDEROUS ATTACKS AGAINST DR CHEE

$

Singapore Democrats

On May 9, The New Paper published the article, "Best showing, but should Dr Chee be going?" by its reporter Foo Jie Ying. The report featured prominently academic Eugene Tan from the Singapore Management University (SMU) who was also a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP).

In addition, a separate article titled "Law prof: Chee lacks staying power" appeared as a sidebar to the main story, also carrying the views of Prof Eugene Tan.

Few people expect high-level journalism from a tabloid like The New Paper. But for an academic to make unsubstantiated and biased comments in the two articles is not an acceptable practice in the academic community.

Below are some examples of Prof Tan's bizarre tirade:

Example 1: "[Dr Chee is] trying to milk voters' sympathy. He was trying essentially to reinforce that he has been persecuted – not only him, but his entire family has had to suffer, and so that's why he's deserving of people's support."

Dr Chee has been vilified, sued, bankrupted, jailed by the PAP in the past 24 years in his work to advance democracy in Singapore. All this has come at a huge personal cost to himself and to his family. However, Hhe has never used that as grounds for support – least of all in this the Bukit Batok by-election campaign.

Dr Chee himself was the one to call for the campaign to focus on issues. It was PAP's Grace Fu who said that Dr Chee was not fit to run a Town Council because he was unemployed.

This elicited a stern response from Singaporeans who saw Ms Fu's attack as below the belt. Dr Chee then explained that he chose to remain in Singapore to continue with the political fight instead of leaving for other countries which would have allowed him to continue his academic career.

To say that Dr Chee is now trying "to milk voters' sympathy" flies in the face of reality and is an insult to a loving and supportive family who have has stood by Dr Chee through all the years.

Example 2: “The law don [Prof Tan] said he also saw Dr Chee's hunger for power in the by-election. When the People's Action Party (PAP) incumbent MP David Ong resigned, Dr Chee was the one who decided he would contest in the by-election. 'He made the decision on his own accord. Unless he did a CEC (central executive committee) meeting over the phone,' [Prof Tan] said. Calling SDP Dr Chee's alter ego, he said: 'The election was not about the party, or even the voters. It was all about him.'”

SDP CEC meetings are internal party meetings that non-CEC members and particularly non-members are not privy to. We are curious to know how Prof Tan came to the conclusion that no CEC meeting was called to discuss the candidacy for the Bukit Batok by-election.

It is quite shocking for an academic to make such a statement when he has no knowledge of how the decision for the SDP's candidate for the by-election was made.

For the record, an extraordinary CEC meeting was held on 16 March 2016 to decide on the SDP's candidate for the by-election and it was a unanimous decision of the CEC to field Dr Chee.

Being an academic myself, I am appalled at how a law professor from the SMU could mount such a vicious attack on Dr Chee without even bothering to check the facts.

Example 3: "I have never seen [Dr Chee] sitting down to help people work through their issues. He has never really held a Meet-the-People Session. He's not interested in helping people. He's interested in getting elected into office."

This is the kind of language we would expect from the PAP but certainly not from an academic. How does Dr Chee hold a Meet-The-People (MTP) Session when he is not an MP? As for non-MTP Sessions, we had organised events in the past to meet with residents and listen to their problems but was stopped by PAP town councils.

If Prof Tan had bothered to check with us, he would have found out that the SDP had made arrangements for one of the residents in Bukit Batok who was an amputee to receive a prosthetic leg. In addition, the SDP tried to organise health-screening for Bukit Batok residents only to be stopped by the Jurong-Clementi Town Council. We are also in the process of building a wheelchair ramp for a resident who has asked but failed to get the Town Council to install one. More recently at the national level, we spoke up for Mdm Felicia Seah after she contacted Dr Chee over her son's (Dominique Lee) death in the SAF.

How does Prof Tan come to the conclusion that Dr Chee is “not interested in helping people” from all this?

Example 4: "[Dr Chee] claims he understands what the heartlander issues are because he lives in a small flat. Let's see what he does, whether he will go into deep hibernation or churn out policy papers which are out of touch with reality."

The language and content in the former NMP's comment betrays his political motivation and, worse, reflects poorly on an academic who seems not to have read any of the material that he refers to.

The SDP has published detailed and comprehensive policy papers addressing issues such as poverty, income inequality, unaffordable public housing, expensive healthcare, an unnecessarily stressful education system, minimum wage, greater financial support for the poor and elderly, and retrenchment insurance.

Many of the ideas we proposed have been co-opted by the PAP or echoed by its MPs.

Yet, the SMU don thinks that these policy papers are “out of touch with reality”. The comment seems more a reflection of his limited grasp of what concerns Singaporeans than of the content of our policy papers.

These papers took much effort and time to research. They could not have been written if the SDP or Dr Chee had gone into “deep hibernation”.

In addition, there is much behind-the-scenes work which the public, including Prof Tan, does not see. These include planning and administrative work for our ground campaign, fund-raising, training of members and volunteers and so on – both during and in between elections.

All these require full-time attention which Dr Chee has provided throughout his leadership of the party. It is shocking that despite all this, Prof Tan asks cynically whether Dr Chee will go into “deep hibernation” after this by-election.

It is not that academics cannot or should not commentate on politics and its practitioners. In fact, we feel strongly that our society lacks such participation by Singaporeans and would like to see more of it.

We are, however, deeply troubled by Prof Eugene Tan's unhinged rant on Dr Chee which seems to be based on personal animosity untethered to facts and reason.

One does wonder how the SMU would react if such commentary from one of its staff – even if it did not carry so much unsubstantiated vitriol – was directed at the PAP instead of Dr Chee.

EVERYDAY LIFE OF A SCDF NSF, READ BEFORE U COMPLAIN ARMY LIFE IS TOUGH

$

<Credits: longtailbutterfly>

Let's tell a story.

I'm working my 24 hr (work 24 hours, off 48 hours) duty. It's 1100 and I just finished morning lecture (equipment drill and familiarisation) in the engine bay of my fire station. It's a Saturday so our rota (platoon-ish) orders nasi lemak. Coding comes in over the loudspeaker and we turn out to a case of locked door, suspected DOA (decomposing body).

Traffic doesn't give way to our LF (red rhino), as per usual (smh). We arrive at the HDB unit and instantly we smell the dead body. The knowledge of smell will come with experience. The niece, who called 995, asks me if her uncle will be ok. I already know the body is decomposing but I reply "We're unsure, but we'll try our best". I lie to her face. My pump operator (PO, and the only regular in the crew) looks at me and grimaces. We've been in this situation together many times before. We easily break the door and the smell intensifies.

I go in first, followed by the ambulance (alpha) paramedic. We find the body on the bed in the master bedroom. The paramedic tells me, "About two weeks". The body is severely bloated, skin green and black. The face is unrecognizable as it has bloated too much. Bile attempts to escape from between the discolored lips creating bubbles. The smell is sweet but rotten and my fireman gags. I get the relevant information I need and step out for a breather. The niece looks at me and asks what is going on. I look at her and I know she knows he's dead. "You uncle... has passed away". I turn away to avoid the emotions. Emotions are killers in this line of work.

We get back in time for nasi lemak lunch. The chicken is a bit soggy this week. The smell of rotten flesh lingers in my nostrils. I watch the Malay romantic drama that my enciks chose on the TV. It's ok, the girl is cute.

Before dinner we get another call - unit fire confirm case. We race there and reach before the fire engine (pumper). They're caught in traffic and will take another few minutes. Two firefighters and I proceed to the unit. Instantly the thick black smoke chokes my throat and waters my eyes. I struggle with my breathing cylinder because the air hose delivery tool is stuck between my backplate and my back. I say fuck it, neighbours are already screaming for us to hurry. The pressure escalates but I close myself off from the members of public, just like normal. We all focus. The only things I listen to are my matra (radio) and my fireman. I just wear my facemask for minimal protection and crawl in.

The fire is well alight on the stove and I shoot at it. The smoke limits my visibility to 0, I now can't see my fingers as I stretch out my arm. I crawl back out and get stuck on a fallen wire. I panic as I think of my family. Emotions are dangerous. A fire biker crawls in and frees me. We step out and I tell the crew the fire is almost finished but our CAF backpacks are finished (water foam sprayers). I send the firefighters down to set up water supply from hydrant and crawl back in with the firebiker. The smoke makes it feel like someone just threw hot ash down my throat. We extinguish the fire using an ass-washing hose from the kitchen toilet. I am coughing badly but he sprays my face with the hose. The kitchen is badly burnt. I can feel the smoke damage in my lungs. The owner and neighbours pat me on the back and thank me for saving their home as I walk out. I smile but I know I took another step closer to death.

We get back at 2200 and order McDonalds. It is the best Double McSpicy I’ve eaten in a while.

At lunch the next day my friend (SAF LTA) tells me how stressful being an instructor at SAFTI has been recently. I remember as my cylinder got trapped on the fallen wire, and how I thought of my family in those few struggling seconds. I nod my head and grunt. " SAF has it tough with JCC and everything huh?" I joke. He agrees enthusiastically.

All in a day’s work for the NSFs in SPF/SCDF. If we fail, someone dies from our direct actions. Welcome to NS. No second chances or semula. Just death. I wish the public knew the risks that some NSFs take each day. We might not be as fit as NDU or as garang as commandos, but we put our lives on the line literally every day.

As an NSF I can say I have saved many lives, fought many fires and contributed to Singapore. No play acting or training for a war that will never happen (though I understand the incredible need for an armed military). I love my job, I love NS and wouldn't trade it for anything else (maybe an EMT vocation).

I am still amazed that many members of public still associate NS with army. I wish people would know. There's no greater feeling in this world than knowing some uncle I helped rescue on my first duty at 0200 will live to eat his favourite mee pok or talk cock with his kakis because of my direct actions. Pride and care right?

At least I get paid $1400 a month (;

HEALTH MINISTER & HPB'S WAR ON WHITE RICE SHOW SHOCKINGLY POOR UNDERSTANDING OF NUTRITION

$
0
0

<Facebook note by Richard Seah>

In its “war against diabetes” the government – led by the Health Minister and the CEO of the Health Promotion Board – is promoting the ridiculous message that eating rice is more harmful than taking sugary soft drinks.

This shows a total lack of understanding about basic nutrition. It also goes against the rest of the medical community worldwide, which, in recent years, has produced report after report about the many harmful effects of sugar. The Health Minister and the CEO of HPB are unfit to be in their positions.

Let’s look at the one most important differences between rice and sugar.

To understand the issue, we need to first know that all types of carbohydrates have to be broken down into their basic forms before they can be used by the body. The three basic forms are:

Glucose, which enters the blood stream to provide energy for our cells, including the brain cells;

Fructose, also known as fruit sugar, which does not directly enter the bloodstream but has to be processed by the liver.

Galactose, which is found mainly in milk products. It does not play as big a role as glucose or fructose.

RICE: Rice is a complex carbohydrate made up of many glucose molecules joined together. It takes some time to digest and the digestion process is slowed down when we eat rice with fat, protein and other foods – which we normally do.

Once rice is digested, glucose enters the blood stream. The body then produces insulin, which transports the glucose to the cells. When the body fails to produce insulin, or when the insulin fails to do its job of delivering glucose to the cells, the result is diabetes, or high blood glucose.

In this sense, eating too much rice – or other complex carbohydrates like other grains and starchy root vegetables – will contribute to diabetes.

SUGAR: Sugar is a simple carbohydrate made up of just two molecules – glucose and fructose.

HFCS or High Fructose Corn Syrup is a modern sweetener made up of 55% fructose, 42% glucose plus a bit of other things. In HFCS, the fructose and glucose are mechanically mixed together. In natural sugar, the fructose and glucose are chemically bound.

Because of its simple molecular structure, sugar / HFCS gets digested quickly. This is why sugar is the best “medicine” if you suffer from hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar (which makes you hungry, weak and irritable and can cause you to faint or even die.)

Fructose does not enter the bloodstream directly. It will not cause “high blood glucose” since it is not glucose. So for a long time, scientists thought that fructose was good for people with diabetes. BUT...

New understanding of how the body works tells us that fructose needs to be processed by the liver, which is the body’s main organ for processing toxins. In fact, the liver deals with fructose in the same way that it deals with alcohol. Because of this, some scientists consider fructose to be a “liver toxin”.

This is an excellent lecture by Dr Robert Lustig, explaining why fructose is toxic. It is 1.5 hours long and a short section is a bit technical. But the bulk of the lecture is actually very layman friendly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBn...

The human body can only handle small amounts of fructose, such as what you might consume from eating small servings of fruit. However, the modern diet contains huge amounts of fructose from sugar and HFCS used liberally in soft drinks and practically all processed foods.

Excessive fructose produces a condition called metabolic syndrome. In turn, metabolic syndrome produces a wide range modern ailments and disease conditions, including diabetes and obesity. Thus, sugar / HFCS / fructose is now known to be an even greater cause of diabetes compared with rice / glucose.

Besides diabetes and obesity, metabolic syndrome produced by excessive fructose also causes fatty liver, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart attack and stroke.
Also, when the liver processes fructose, one of the by-products is uric acid. This causes gout – an extremely painful condition produced by swelling of the joints, usually at the large toe. Gout is normally blamed on a diet high in meat and beans. But too much fructose from sugar will also cause gout.

CHRONIC INFLAMMATION: Yet another problem with sugar is that is produces chronic inflammation – a condition where various organs and other parts of the body are constantly swollen or inflamed. Again, chronic inflammation is linked to diabetes and obesity.

New understanding further tells us that chronic inflammation is the primary cause of heart disease. It causes blood vessels to get swollen and to rupture. Then the body patches up the damage with a covering of cholesterol. Over time, constant ruptures and patching up causes the cholesterol deposits to block the blood vessels, leading to heart attacks.

In addition, rupturing of blood vessels produces internal blood clots, which again can block blood flow, causing heart attack and stroke. Increasingly, the scientific community is beginning to acknowledge that chronic inflammation is the leading cause of heart disease, not cholesterol and saturated fats.

Besides sugar, other foods that cause chronic inflammation include:

Polyunsaturated vegetable cooking oils, which turn rancid easily from exposure to heat, light and oxygen;

Artificial trans fats formed during highly unnatural industrial processes to turn liquid vegetable oils into semi-solid margarine and vegetable shortening;

Chemical food additives.

These are the very foods that doctors, nutritionists have been recommending for the past 50 years. They – and the government health authorities that take their advice – are ultimately the cause of diabetes, obesity, heart disease and other modern ailments.

There are lots more problems with sugar, which is now also strongly linked to the development of cancer. But I will just touch on two more.

ADDICTION: Sugar promotes the release of dopamine, a brain chemical that makes you feel good. This is why people crave for sweet foods when they feel stressed or depressed. But the effect is short-lived. Once it wears out, you crave more sugar.

This makes sugar very highly addictive. Those who have tried to kick their sugar habits will know how hard it is. In fact, scientists like Dr Mark Hyman believe that sugar is even more addictive than hard drugs like cocaine.

MENTAL ILLNESS: In Sugar Blues, a book of investigative journalism on sugar, author William Dufty observes that the first mental institutions opened in Europe shortly after sugar became part of the regular diet.

Glucose from sugar (and rice and other carbohydrates) is food for the brain. Even though the brain is a relatively small organ, it uses up the bulk of the body’s glucose supply. Too much food can certainly make the brain unwell.

Excessive sugar intake is today known to cause a range of mental conditions, including depression and schizophrenia.

More alarmingly, studies since the 1980s by criminologists such as Alexander Schauss and Stephen Schoenthaler link sugar with anti-social and violent criminal behaviour. In experiments with prisoners, researchers have shown that removing sugar from the diet produced vast improvements in behaviour, including fewer fights, lesser use of vulgar language and fewer attempted escapes.

GLYCEMIC INDEX (GI): This is a measure of how quickly different carbohydrate foods cause a rise in the blood sugar level. Foods with a high GI are said to be “bad” for people with diabetes. And the government is using GI figures to “prove” that rice is worse than sugar.

The GI is a highly theoretical concept that has little practical purpose. Problems with the GI concept include:

GI measures the effect of single foods like rice, sugar, etc. But we do not normally eat these foods on their own. Instead, we eat, for example, rice with fats, protein, spices, etc. When we eat rice with other dishes, the GI of the entire meal is very much lower than the GI of rice on its own.

Some foods have very high GI but very little glucose anyway. A good example is watermelon, which is mainly water and contains very little glucose. So even though watermelon has a high GI, its impact on blood glucose is negligible. Because of this, scientists have developed an alternative measure called the Glycemic Load (GL). However, GL figures are not as widely available as GI figures.

Inconsistency: Different GI tables give different values. For example, many GI tables put the GI of French baguette at about 97, which is very high. Yet some tables put the figure at less than 50, which is low.

Illogical: Most GI tables say unpolished brown rice has a higher GI than white rice. The goes against common sense because rightly, the fibre in brown rice would slow down digestion and hence the rate of glucose absorption.

Food quality – GI tables do not consider if a food is natural or artificial, healthy or “junk”. For example. Mars bar chocolate is listed as having moderate GI, lower than many natural foods like brown rice, wholemeal bread and most starchy root vegetables. Does this mean that diabetics are better off eating Mars bars?

Beyond GI, we saw above that fructose produces more harmful effects on health – including causing diabetes – even though it does not enter the bloodstream. Sugar (fructose and glucose) has a moderate GI of 70, which is lower than that of rice, wholewheat bread, etc (glucose only). This does not mean that sugar is more suitable for diabetics.

NATURAL SWEETENERS: Artificial sweeteners like aspartame (in Coke Light) and sucralose (in Coke Zero) are many times more harmful than sugar, They destroy brain cells. They also increase your appetite so they do not help you lose weight. Avoid them.

One good form of sugar is palm sugar or gula melaka. It has a low glycemic index, meaning it will not cause your blood sugar level to rise quickly. It is also packed with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, unlike refined white sugar which has practically zero nutrition.

Another excellent sweetener is malt syrup, also known as rice malt, rice syrup, barley malt, etc. The Chinese call it 麦芽糖. This is maltose, which is made up of two glucose molecules. It does not come with the harmful effects of excessive fructose. But it is not as sweet as regular sugar. You can buy it at health stores but there is also a cheap version from China, you just have to look hard for it at regular supermarkets.

Forget about honey except maybe with lemon, or good vinegars as a home remedy for sore throat etc. Cheap honey may be adulterated with sugar. Expensive honey is not worth the money as whatever medicinal value it has is minimal.

There are some other natural sweeteners like Stevia, Buddha fruit, xylitol, etc. These have limited applications and some downsides. Eg stevia tends to leave an unpleasant after taste. But generally they are safe if not taken excessively.

Ultimately, you will want to...

KICK THE SUGAR HABIT: The most effective way to kick the sugar habit is to go “cold turkey“. Stop all sugar completely.

Initially, you will feel miserable. All your foods will taste bland. BUT... in just two weeks, you will regain the sensitivity of your tastebuds. Then “bland” foods like white rice, unsweetened soy milk or Milo kosong (without added milk or sugar) will start to taste sweet.

As your tastebuds regain sensitivity, you will also discover new taste sensations. You will discover that food is not merely sweet, salty, spicy, etc, but they have complex subtle flavours. You will enjoy your food more.

Just be careful of hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar when you go cold turkey. If you start to feel weak and extremely hungry, to the point of wanting to faint, take some sugar quickly.

It also helps to eat naturally sweet foods, such as root vegetables like carrot, onion, sweet potato, etc. When cooked slowly for a long time, they taste very sweet – without providing large amounts of fructose that will screw up your liver.

ONE FINAL DIFFERENCE: Rice and other grains have been eaten by humans as their main food for over 10,000 years.

Sugar was first produced a few thousand years ago in what is today Papua New Guinea. It spread to Southeast Asia and India and finally reached Europe only about 500 years ago. At that time, it was so expensive that only the rich could afford to take sugar – a few grains at a time.

It was only after the Industrial Revolution less than 300 years ago that sugar became more affordable and entered the mainstream diet. And only in the last 50 years or so that sugar consumption rose sharply.

So throughout most of human history, average sugar consumption was near zero. In modern societies today, sugar consumption is as high as 70 kg per person per year. This sharp rise in sugar consumption – along with a rise in the consumption of food chemicals and artificial foods – corresponds with the rise in modern degenerative diseases.
To say that rice is worse than sugar is simply ludicrous.

LUSH AESTHETICS: OUR SLIMMING TREATMENT ISN'T A SCAM, DO NOT DEFAME US

$

Dear ASS Editor,

I refer to your article posted on 6 May 2016 at the following URL:
http://www.allsingaporestuff.com/article/beware-lush-aesthetics-hard-sel...

The article mentioned that our treatment is a scam, involved hard-sell tactics and hidden costs which is untrue and highly defamatory.

This is what actually happened during the visit by the contributor:

The lady visited us for a Fat Freezing treatment to be performed on her tummy. During consultation, one of our advisors recommended her to undergo the treatment with a larger applicator given the size of her tummy as compared to the applicator used. There might be a miscommunication between our advisor and the client on the basis of "tummy imbalance" as our advisor was only mentioning that the treatment performed with the smaller sized applicator will not yield the best results for the client and therefore, she is proposing that the treatment be performed with the larger sized applicator at additional costs. However, the client refused and decided against proceeding with the treatment at all. As we have blocked specific timing of 2 hours for each of our clients to ensure complete service satisfaction, we implemented a policy of charging a consultation fee of $80 for new patrons to prevent clients who have confirmed their visits and rejected the service during the visit. We would waive such consultation fees for clients who are unable to undergo treatments due to medical reasons or whom are unfit for the treatments.

We are a reputed aesthetics centre with a track record of delivering high customer satisfaction standards and treatment results. We are also a leading provider of fat freezing treatments with a record of proven results.

We are a company whom is very concerned with our branding and reputation on all platforms. Therefore, we would like to request to take down the unjustified article with defamatory contents which labels us as a 'scam' and 'hard-selling' based on miscommunication.

We appreciate your kind response and action by 16 May 2016 before deciding on our next course of action.

Thank you
Best Regards,
Gavin Heng
Director, Marketing

Dear Editors,

Unhygienic food from DIN TAI FUNG ! The purpose I wrote this is to let everyone aware that even a restaurant also got unhygienic food .

I need to report on the dead fly I found in my Kai Lan vegetable which I purchased from Din Tai Fung at Jurong Point on May 6th .I was having my dinner and was disgusted to find in my meal a dead fly. This is not the hygiene I expect from a restaurant .

This is so called a restaurant awarded H.K Michelin Star ? I feel ashamed of the environment at Jurong Point Din Tai Fung . I hope there will be immediate action taken.

BOUGHT PRE PACKED STEAK ON SPECIAL OFFER, BUT OTHER SIDE IS NOT FRESH

Dear A.S.S,

Yesterday, I went to NEX Cold Storage wanting to buy steak from the counter, but the counter was close. For the first time, I bought pre-packed steak.

The side facing outside looks quite nice.

As you can see from the photos, the other side facing the styrofoam was grey.

Is this safe to eat?

Even though it was labelled special offer, the staff should ensure that the meat is safe for consumption.

Waste my time. Now I have to throw it away and go to NTUC to buy another one.

DOCTORS BECK AND STONE PET HOSPITAL OVERCHARGE BY 314%

$

Dear A.S.S,

I’m writing this concerning medical cost of a vet practice here.

We brought our dog to Doctors Beck and Stone (formally known as ARVRC-Animal Recover Veterinary Referral Centre) for his eye treatment in Jan this year. He was prescribed to continue with two eye drips, Trusopt and Ganfort costing $35 and $26 respectively.

In early Apr, we brought our dog for his eye check and again was prescribed with the two similar eye drops. But here came the shocking news. The cost has suddenly escalated within a span of 3 months to $140 (5 ml) and $120 (3 ml) for the same vol. An increased of 292% and 364% respectively. We were completely astound and speechless.

We have never doubted their professionalism and were considered our family pet doctor and has entrusted our dog to them on countless occasions. All along we have trusted their pricing without question. But the latest surged in price for the two tiny bottles of eye drops jolted us. For the first time, we were not prepared to pay for the exorbitant price tag, instead we requested for a prescription so that we can purchase at hospital pharmacy. The prescription alone cost $18 !

Eventually, we purchased similar drips at hospital pharmacy, costing $34 and $36, a huge savings of 314% and 237% respectively.

We wrote to them requesting them to enlighten us why the huge discrepancy in the price. If it was one off visit, I would not bother to seek better understanding. But they are our family pet vet. Regrettably, one month has passed and they have ignored.

Ironically, they have proudly display their “values” in their website.
#2 – We offer good value, with consistent high and unrivaled service quality. Our fees are transparent and identical for all per owners.
#8 – We respond to all inquires within 48 hrs.

Sadly, none of the values were adhere to concerning my case.
Are vet practices governed by any medical council on pricing ethics?

THE BESPOKE CLUB: OUTLET CLOSE EARLY, BANS CUSTOMER FROM COMMENTING ON FACEBOOK

Dear A.S.S,

I was introduced by a friend to shop at The Bespoke Club at Suntec City. On the website, it stated that their operation hours are from 10.30 - 8.30pm.

On 1st and 2nd May 2016, I reached at 8pm but the shop was closed. I even asked the Suntec Information Counter on the shop opening hours and they were not aware of any changes or special arrangement.

I wrote to the company's FB Pages and received a reply that there was a "misunderstanding". However, when I asked what "misunderstanding", they deleted away my comments. I screenshot and pasted the comments, the company blocked me from commenting. Is this right that a company blocked people when they merely brush off customer's comments by saying it's a misunderstandinv without further explanation?

Don't shop at The Bespoke Club. Lousy service.
